Punk and Punk related genres mostly. But i'm pretty varied and have albums from alll big genres.

How long have you been a member?
Just over a year.

What made you join a music forum?
The people on music forums had a common interest and I was looking to expand a little. Very few people in real life have the musical knowledge or even the general smarts.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities?
It wasn't my first music forum, I had joined a few others and decided they weren't for me. I googled "music forum" and this came up, I made an account and I lurked for a month allowing me to see it had a good sense of community and all the members were really knowledgable. To the point I was a little nervous to post for a while.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you?
It may sound a bit cliche but music seriously is my life. It can change how I'm feeling almost all the time and when I'm a bit down and thinking "what's the point?" music really is one of the reasons I cite as a great thing about life. It's basically the biggest interest I have and it allows me to strike up a conversation with a lot of people.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more?
I made great friends and got some awesome recommendations.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum?
Too many.

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here?
I have learned that music is a lot bigger than I had previously thought with hundreds of musical genres and scenes left to explore. I also learned a lot about people, how they work and came to the realisation that I'm not that unique and somewhere there are people like me.

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance?
Other member's behavior can rub off on you and change you a little. Case in point, before I joined I would never judge someone based on their music taste. Now I sometimes do.

What made you join a music forum?
i had to have music for the evolution, man

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities?

like many, i stumbled in this joint via google. it was my first stop. the lay out made sense to me.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you?
for me music is a way to associate emotion with something audibly tangible while experiencing the world around me. it makes me feel whatever it needs to at any given time.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more?
though i consider myself an active member, i feel as though i interact within a self made sub community and not the general population. this allows me concentrate my energy on my own experience, while occasionally exchanging with others

i find that this forum is much more functional, for me, when i can take suggestions but rarely directly give a critical opinion,.....i guess i'm more into observations than judgment

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum?
drunk posting,....it keeps me from drunk dialing

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here?
musical voyeurism is the only way to go

What made you join a music forum? Purely out of boredom, and to see if I could talk with likeminded people who were into the same stuff as me, and also as a means to discover other bands.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? This is probably the best music forum out there, pretty much felt quite welcome from when I first started and there's a couple of really cool people on here who I speak to a fair bit now.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? As most people have probably said already, music generally does different things to me, it can bring me up and bring me right back down in an instance, it can chill me out and make me feel hyperactive, it can instill all kinds of different emotions. It pretty much means the world to me, God only knows what I'd do without music, it's definitely my 'vice'.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? The few people I get along with mainly, also it's helped me get into a few bands so I'll stick around until I'm no longer liked/I can no longer be bothered, the latter will probably not be for a while though, I like it here a lot.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum? booboo

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here? Well I feel like I've gained a couple of friends here, so hopefully I'll speak to them for many moons to come.

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance? Nothing to put here, sorry.

Music preference: Anything really. I listen to hip-hop and metal of all kinds the least though.

How long have you been a member? About 2 1/2 years by now.

What made you join a music forum? My old forum collapsed due to infighting between its moderators and admins, so I thought I'd jump ship to a bigger music forum.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? It's broader-ranged, and the community's a pretty sound one.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? Music can connect with just about any emotion I can think of. As for what it means to me, I've spent about a decade and counting amassing all the music I have now, so it's valuable to me to say the least. I'd say I couldn't live without it, but I'd probably get used to it after a while.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? Sometimes I just feel the need to flag up something about music I in a way that being offline doesn't really allow me to. Being a member here fits that bill perfectly.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum? Actually meeting one of its members face-to-face and going to a gig with them was great (if that counts).

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here? I guess I learned that there's always someone who's something like you out there, no matter how unique you feel.

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance? Nothing springs to mind...

How long have you been a member?
4 1/2 years

What made you join a music forum? I was looking for new music to listen to, and was also drifting between various different forums at the time, looking for a fun community. I found both here, and ended up staying!

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? This was the first music forum I came across, I never really felt the need to look for another as it had everything I was looking for.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? It makes me feel better, no matter my mood. Sometimes it can make me feel melancholic, or sorrowful, but it's always a thoughtful sadness rather than a depressive one. At the same time, music can recover my positive perspective of life more than any other thing in the world, even those I love the most. It has and always will have a powerful effect on me, and I don't think I could ever do without it.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? The community, really. It's (generally) intelligent, I have good fun posting here and there are a number of people here who are fantastic at writing reviews, which makes it very easy to dip into new genres and discover music you've never thought to listen to before. On top of that, the Lounge area is active and often full of thought-provoking topics which keep me coming back to take part in further.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum? At the risk of sounding cheesy, every new thread about a band I haven't heard of, or even some I have, is an interesting experience. Every member is eager to give their opinions and share their favourites, I've spent hours just trawling through threads on this forum, opening all the links to music and reading what everyone has to say about them.

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here? That regardless of how much music I think I know and how varied I think my taste is, that there will always be just as much music out there that I've never even considered to be listened to!

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance? I think that people often think of a music forum as just a place where people discuss music, but what's always struck me about this forum is that even though it's massive, it always gives the feeling of being a small, warm community. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out why that is, and I think it's a combination of the standard that was set in posting a very long time ago, and the way that the forum is moderated. There's no segregation between normal member and mod, other than that the mods clean it up when it gets messy - no "holier than thou" attitude, which i think helps seal the community tighter. All in all, it's a fantastic place to post - sometimes it gets out of hand, but it's always dealt with, and there are rarely bad feelings. It's one of the nicest forums I've ever posted on.

How long have you been a member? 1 year and some months.

What made you join a music forum? My internet broke some years ago and when it was reconnected the forum i had used had collapsed, I didnt expect to stick around here at all because its so large i didnt think i would make an impact and such. But I have infact made some very good friends :).

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? It's extremely friendly, I've tried to join numerous other forums but keep comparing members and been driven away by the arrogance of the members on them. I can't stand the pretentious outlook most veterans have on other forums. This remains the only forum I post on currently.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? No matter how ****ty I'm feeling I know I can put on some daft punk etc and be instantly happy. Not just electronica music cheers me up, I remember a few weeks ago I was crying whilst driving home so turned up Lou Reeds Perfect Day as far as it could go. And it cheered me up immensely singing along.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? Members, they keep me going, some of them are like actual irl friends. The music sections depend on whos active, theres very few electronica fans about here, so I try to involve myself in new tastes which kinda works out well for me too, but not where my heart lies.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum? When we used to go on Tokbox quite often and nobody could understand me or after I'd spoken, everyone would laugh... because they couldnt understand me :(. Boo Boo was interesting too when he went ape **** and banned everyone :)

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here? There's so many different walks of life on here I didn't even know existed, everyone and everything and everywhere is so different. It actually amazes me how different stuff is to normality here. I don't think I'd have known this if I'd never joined a forum as I would never have had the opportunity to talk to said people :D

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance? Nothing sticks out, if I think of anything, I'll edit this :)

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? like many...this was the first one that popped up with 'google'....and immediately i like the amount of users and the amount of topics

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? i'm not sure if music really makes me feel anything...although i would say it amplifies what i am already feeling...music means the world to me....i am sure i would have killed myself decades ago had i not started really listening to music

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? i feel like everybody here for the most part wants to inform about music as well as learn...which creates a nice atmosphere

ThePhanastasio 01-07-2011 02:30 PM

Age (Optional):
- 23

Location:
- Ashland, KY

Music preference:
- It really depends on my mood, but for the most part I'm really into free-form, improvisational music, e.g. jam bands, free jazz...

How long have you been a member?
- Four months or so.

What made you join a music forum?
- I do have friends in real life with whom I talk about music, but there are always other things being discussed at length, and music tends to be less in depth discussion with them. I wanted to join a forum which could assist in introducing me to new music, and allow me to discuss music extensively with others who enjoy and appreciate many different types of music.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities?
- The apparent diversity and intelligence of the core members of the forum. Many other forums I encountered had people who really didn't seem as open-minded about music and such taking over the majority of the posting. I wasn't partcularly down with that.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you?
- It doesn't always cause me to feel any particular way. It varies with the type of music. It can amp me up, calm me down, help me focus, make me laugh, cry, or any number of things. I love it because of the diversity of feelings it elicits.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more?
- It's not so massive that it's overwhelming, and I can leave for a few days and not feel like I've completely missed out on thousands of conversations. It his, however, active enough that I can spend hours and hours on here reading and occasionally responding to threads if I'm so inclined.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum?
Nothing particularly extraordinary. I've just really enjoyed it here. I've been introduced to a lot of music, and hopefully opened some other ears to new music myself.

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here?
- I've learned that pretty much everyone believes that they "listen to a little bit of everything" when they introduce themselves on a music forum, and that's also very seldom actually true.

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance?
- That about covers it. Just come to music forums with an open mind, willingness to share your knowledge and learn from others.

How long have you been a member? About a year and a half.

What made you join a music forum? Friend told me about it.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? This was the only one I was exposed to.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? Different music makes me feel different things. That's why it's great to have different genres and styles... there's always something to suit the mood. What does it mean to me? I don't know. Things wouldn't be as nice without it.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? People here rock. Also I can steal albums that other people listen to and come off as really smart in real life.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum? bandteacher1

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here? People like you more when you're tolerant of someone you disagree with. Especially about music.

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance?
I don't think I'm a member of any other forums, but I've looked at them, and they always make me kind of angry and/or depressed. This is a fantastic website. I would be a much different person if I weren't a member. that's probably a little sad.

How long have you been a member? Around a year and a half

What made you join a music forum? I was looking for a new place to talk about and discover music

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? These people took their music pretty seriously, and they're very open to sharing new things.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? Music is pretty much the way I express my emotions, I can't play any instruments but any certain song or band can conjure up any range of emotions and memories attached to them. It pretty much is everything to me.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? The great recommendations and people here

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum? That fat girl love/feminism discussion.

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here? Be more relaxed and opened about your tastes, you might find something that you liked but never thought you would (I did with screamo thanks to this forum)

How long have you been a member?

What made you join a music forum?
- I initially joined because I was in search of some more djs for my online radio station so I wandered over here through a google search and just never left. I did recruit a few people but my station fell apart a few months after I joined :(

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities?
- When I first joined I was a bit hesitant because I felt like most of the members were snobbish and would bash anything that was popular/on the radio. After awhile I just stopped caring and didn't let that bother me.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you?
- I have different uses for music. Sometimes I just need something to fill the void of silence but other times I use it as a tool to channel my emotions. I have certain playlists dedicated to certain situations. If I'm feeling pissed off/anxious/in love/energetic etc. I just go to a certain playlist.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more?
- It has to be the members and how knowledgeable they are about certain genres. I also always come back if I have been out of the loop in the music world for awhile and need some new recommendations.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum?
it's not really that interesting but I made a really good friend from here that we went on to talk to for about three years away from the forums before we had a little fallout and now don't talk to each other anymore :(

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here?
- Stand your ground even though others don't like the same things you do they don't really have to.

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance?
- Check your baggage at the door and come in with an open mind, you might learn a thing or two and actually find some music you didn't think you would listen to otherwise.

What made you join a music forum?
I just wanted to find a community of music lovers. I love music, but my knowledge isn't very vast, so I wanted to expand on that too. Hence why I mostly just lurk and read then post.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities?
It was literally the first one that came up.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you?
On the hearing side, it simulates a certain mood or energy which I love. It really stimulates my mind in other ways. I dunno how else to explain it, but a lot of times I come up with a video in my head to go with it. Anything from moving stationary pictures (does that make sense), to animations, to even just typography. It's very seldom I'll just listen to music; I have to come up with something in head

So to me, music is something that lets me be creative.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more?
The community and it's people.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum?
Nothing extremely intresting.

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here?

Be opened minded. I didn't think I was that close minded to certain genres in the beginning, but after a bit, I was quickly proven wrong. But at the same time, be very adamant on what you like; don't dislike something simply because someone else doesn't agree.

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance?

What made you join a music forum?
One day I was seacrhing for new screamo bands, I believe, and I came across their hardcore recommendation thread and I just loved it.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities?
It has by fay the most tasteful members I have ever come across. There's a reason why everyone here's elitist, deservingly so, I must say.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you?
I'm sure a lot of people has said that music is everything to them, and it's a cliche response to this question, but that is what it is. It's everything to me, and without it, I think life would be all the more difficult. It's just that medium of escape that everyone needs, as well as that medium of problem solving. It's an all encompassing thing, this thing called music.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more?
Definitely the community. Everyone has a wealth of musical knowledge, as well as, diverse personalities. Something new to be learned everyday.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum?
An experience? Well, one of the funniest had to be caused by a member, namely "Boo Boo" who was a moderator, that I guess, "lost and temper" and went on a banning spree. That stirred up discussion for quite a while and I think still does.

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here?
A lot, apart from more music that I could care to name, there's also a lot of general knowledge to be gained conversing with members.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities?
mb has the widest range of music posted by a lot, like, by a ****ton

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you?
music obviously has an effect on people, as opposed to random sounds. each string of sounds which can be called music has a different effect, usually varying from person to person as to what the effect is with noticable common grounds in bulks of people. some variables which may correlate with how different types of music effects different people are their immediate social group, upbringing, and level of desire to explore... therefor, I guess music is a phenomena in which certain sounds evoke feelings by reflecting a persons level of affiliation with their culture, or peer group, and somehow bring about past emotional responses to events which the percieved music reflects

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? i dont anymore, but it used to be literally endless music, even like a year after i stoped posting i still have more music that i can listen to

What made you join a music forum? My taste in music was clearly lacking unlike now.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? What other ones are there that are as kind, helpful, and knowledgeable as this one? Seriously show me one..

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? Everyone needs something to default on when there tired, sick, bored, interested...etc. Mine is music. As the saying goes Life is about the journey not the destination, and well music makes my journey worth taking.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? "The love of course. " As Jackhammer said.

Gavin B. 01-09-2011 09:27 PM

Age (Optional): Let's put it this way... I'm younger than Bono.

Location: Born and raised St. Louis Mo but I spent 2 decades of my life, attending college in Boston, then working & living in Cambridge, Boston, Brooklyn and Oak Bluffs in Martha's Vineyard.

Music preference: I listen to all kinds of music but have spent a lot of time listening to and writing about delta & country blues, psychedelic music, reggae and East Coast punk and post punk bands.

How long have you been a member? I think around 2 years

What made you join a music forum? I've always been involved with music forums on the internet. My insatiable curiosity about new music is what motivates me.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? I actually belong to the No Depression forum but Music Banter is my home forum and I maintain my music blog here. At one time I had a blog at the Mojo Magazine but I got sick of the trolls that infested their forum website.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? Music has been a huge part of my life since I was born. My father was rock music promoter who had mixed success. He took me to my first Dylan concert at age six. Most of my circle of childhood friends were children of musicians who went on to become musicians themselves. A couple of my childhood friends have become musicians of notoriety. From those friends, I discovered early on that I lacked the single minded determination it takes pursue a career in music. I was a good writer but no bands were in the market for a full time lyricist. I've worked off and on for several years as a freelance arts and music writer but most of my income is from writing internet news content and advertising copy.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? I get a lot of great music recommendations and enough positive feedback from others to keep me coming back. There isn't a hipper-than-thou elitist attitude that is the normative behavior in other music forums.

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum? The Music Banter Hall of Fame thread always had interesting discussions about the relative merits of a nominee's musical legacy. I wish somebody would breathe some life back into that thread because there were some very lively debates on the Hall of Fame nominations thread.

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here? I'm not sure I'll have much of perspective on what I've learned from the MB experience until I no longer a part of the MB "experience." The best learning experiences are often the ones become good object lessons in hindsight. It never occurred to me that I didn't learn anything worthwhile in college until ten years after I graduated. By the same token, all of my near obsessive journal writing about the daily mundane events of my life over the past couple of decades has improved my writing skills immeasurably, in a way that all of the journalism classes in college never did.

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance? It's good to be a member of a music forum that welcomes people with all kinds of musical tastes and doesn't have a dogmatic line on what good music is or isn't.

Real Name (Optional): My real name is Gavin and my real last name begins with the letter "B" but you'll never get me to divulge my true last name in an internet forum full of people I've never met face-to-face. I also use Gavin B. on my radio show because I think the handful of people that listen to the show may nearly as deranged as I am.

My radio show is at a real FM radio station with with a real transmitter! It's a weekly show on KDHX FM St. Louis which is a community owned underground radio station that has been on and off the air since 1968. All of the dee-jays are volunteers and there are no format restrictions imposed by station management. The station is supported almost entirely by listener donations and a few grants from cultural and arts foundations. KDHX's founder, Jeremy Lansman is a bit of a legendary figure in community radio who has used his brilliant technical skills to get underground radio stations up and running in nearly a dozen communities in the United States.

Thats real cool, i wish it had an online broadcast version so i could hear it.

I do have a question though. I am trying to get a job at this local radio station near me. now since I have no formal experience I realize they are not going to give me DJ power but I would at least like to get my foot in the door. Do you have any advice on how to do so? I honestly would be fine cleaning there bathroom, I just want to be around it so one day I can actually DJ there.

Ask them if they have any intern type positions or entry level positions. Maybe you'll be able to get your foot in the door that way.

The best thing you can do to get an on-air job is to make an audition tape or cd. If it's a local station with a small budget you might get the right person to listen to it. It's important to keep your voice in the deeper registers and use a conversational tone when you're on the mic. It also helps if you say things that are entertaining without soundinf like you're reading from a script.

Volunteering at a public radio station is a good way to get your foot in the door. I got a paying job at a local NPR station in Boston reading news updates playing the segue music leading into the syndicated shows just by hanging around the station as a volunteer.

At KDHX, nearly everyone who wants a shot at the microphone will eventually get it because there's a total of 42 show slots to staff over the course of a one week schedule and there's a lot of turnover because the deejays are volunteer unpaid staff. I was on the air within two weeks of sending an audition tape to them. All you need is a short 1 hour training class on how to use the mics, the turn tables and the sound equipment before you can go on the air.

Music preference: I like to think I'm pretty diverse and open to all kinds of music, but I lean toward avant-garde/experimental side, noisy, spacey music, psychedelic, industrial, alternative and post-punk. Every genre interests me especially if it goes out of its comfort zone.

How long have you been a member? about 9 months

What made you join a music forum? Beside a few friends and my brother that I don't really see that often anymore (at least not as much as I'd like), I don't have anyone to discuss music with in a more thought provoking manner. This place filled that gap.

How come you choose MB as your music community over other music communities? This is the first music forum I joined and the first one I found. I don't remember quite clearly now, but I was looking for some band and among many google results there was some MB topic. That's how I got here. When I saw the broadness of it, how organized it was, had many genres, something for everybody, interesting discussions, well written reviews, I decided to join and give my two cents.

How does Music make you feel and what it means to you? Music always makes me feel something, even the music I don't like. But, when it hits me on a deeper level it can be a transcendent experience (even if it's just a moment). Then I become addicted to that something, I want to feel it again and so I search for it discovering more music along the way. It seems like it's the road that never ends. Although I must say, I'm still able to find that something in my old favorites. That's how I know they are worth all the time I invested in listening to them.

Tell me what makes the MB online forum work for you and keep you coming back for more? Interesting people with their own views on music and things that I enjoy reading, taking and giving recommendations, sharing my own thoughts, discovering new music...

Describe an interesting experience you had on the forum? I guess it would be becoming a mod, a somewhat unexpected opportunity to help the forum that inspired me in many ways.

What have you learned or what will you take away from your experiences here? The most interesting experience is chatting with people from all over the world and learning that love for music makes us all very much alike regardless of our real life probably different surroundings and circumstances. Not just location, but age and gender don't make much difference here. I mean, I know it's the nature of internet and anonymity, but experiencing it more closely in this kind of community has been very interesting for me.

Let me know of any other points that you feel might interest me negative/positive about your experiences regarding being involved in a Music forum and its Members, now's your chance? I think I've said what I wanted to.
