Default Fiddling while Rome burns ?

OK, this is a music forum but I’m at the point where hurtling towards our species self induced extinction occupies most of my thoughts. I suspect it’s too late for homo sapiens to admit our stupidity. Makes me feel even discussing this is like singing hymns of the deck of the Titanic as it sinks.

Fiddling while Rome burns

That was a headline in a local paper yesterday. It was used to describe our Prime minister going campaigning while inflation hit a new record high.

Getting back to your point, the terminator said it best "it's in your nature to destroy yourselves".

It is indeed. My greatest fear is our species will survive unchanged launching our bloodthirsty instincts out into the universe. Either way, I wont be here.

I have two kids. I'm scared of what their future will look like.

To paraphrase Kanan Jarrus, all I can do is what I've been doing, that is train them the best I could.

Two intelligent brothers 5 and 7 asked me ‘But why are adults all trying to kill us’. When I ascertained they were asking about nuclear, biological, chemical warfare and climate change I took the cowards way out and told them to ask their fathers. If I had children myself I’ve no idea how I’d answer questions like that given my belief the underlying problem is what we are as a species.

I don't think you took the cowardly way out. The answer is just too long and too complicated to have to explain to kids that age. They're too young to understand politics, let alone identity politics. Then there is the religious aspect, and the greed. It's a tough thing to explain to an adult, let alone a child.

I don't know, break it down into bite sized bits? Start with the easy one, money. People will kill to get rich, even if it means killing kids (i.e. sweatshops).

Maybe you could say it's like candy. Generally speaking, candy isn't good for our health, but we still want it because it tastes good.

We selfishly want lots of things that are killing the planet (or other people) and we don't have systems in place to prevent people from getting them.

Inflation will rise and fall until the officials get their heads together
