Do You Hate Authority?

I get the feeling some people just generally hate authority for the sake of it. No matter whether hard done by or not they fight against the 'man'. Is it always necessary? I mean sometimes having people take control of things can be good for you and for them - for example in learning environments.

Would you consider yourself a person who dislikes those who have authority over you? I mean in any circumstance (not the mob team, ROFL).

Give an example of times you've challenged authority if you have.

SATCHMO 06-11-2011 01:41 AM

Lol...

I don't mind Authority, but all of their songs are in German.[/SARCASM]

To each their own. Nobody likes being told what to do.

Can you speak for everyone now? What a privilege.

I might as well close the thread now.

Wow, someone is in the mood for a quarrel. Why do you feel the need to be so confrontational? NOBODY likes being told what to do. Can you really argue with that? You seem to view yourself as the authority figure that people are trying to fight. You could get off the cross for 5 seconds and realize that no one is against you here.

Guybrush 06-11-2011 03:43 AM

I don't mind being told what to do if that person knows better and isn't suggesting I do something I know is f.ex stupid. Although I am highly critical towards the quality of any authority, I definetly I recognize the need for authority and so I guess "it doesn't bother me" is the best poll option for me.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 06-11-2011 05:33 AM

Matters.

The Virgin 06-11-2011 05:52 AM

I voted "No. It does not bother me".
I'm the type of person that can easily follow rules and doesn't have any problem receiving directions or commands from anyone, for as long as we're under the right circumstances.

i think it is mainly because I'm a Virgo and my zodiac sign tells me to be obedient and a rule-abiding person.

for everyone's info, here are the lists of the zodiac signs that don't have problems with authority and those that are just too hard headed to follow rules:

obidient to authority (Virgo, Cancer, Libra, Pisces, Sagitarius, Capricorn)
does not like to follow commands (Scorpio, Taurus, Leo, Aries, Aquarius, Gemini)

education at its finest..hehe

The Monkey 06-11-2011 06:15 AM

I think some form of authority is necessary to curtail the destructive forces of capitalism, and provide some financial security for its victims. This authority must however be transparent and open to prevent corruption and abuse.

Mykonos 06-11-2011 06:39 AM

I don't particularly like people telling me what to do, but I recognise that for now, we need rules to stop everyone from killing each other. Hopefully that'll change some day, but for now, we're stuck with them.

I wholeheartedly agree with this :)

Sansa Stark 06-11-2011 07:54 AM

As long as the authority in question is respectful and competent, not at all.

Burning Down 06-11-2011 08:05 AM

Authority doesn't bother me at all.

Howard the Duck 06-11-2011 08:20 AM

i only really hate my boss, cos he's full of crap

i don't have that much problems with people enforcing the law, cos society will crumble into mindless mob rule if they aren't around

but then again, i hate getting tickets for illegal parking and speeding and such

i am a pretty law abiding citizen "most" of the time, but I reserve my right to drive like Van Diesel

so on a scale - yes, fuck the Man with a sharp branch

I don't mind authority as long as there are checks and balances in place.

When authority is left to cherry pick which rules they will decide to enforce that's where I see a problem

it's gets a bit hypocritical to go around enforcing rules and then abusing those same rules just because you are in a position of authority.

If they're not an idiot and actually know what they're doing, I don't mind being told what to do.

djchameleon 06-11-2011 11:19 AM

I don't mind being told what to do in the bedroom!

Howard the Duck 06-11-2011 11:20 AM

authority is quite different from domination

Pretty much this...

I normally see excessive hate for authority in younger people, but that's natural I suppose... Of course, I've met a few adults with that same mentality, so it's not exactly limited to the youth.

crash_override 06-12-2011 01:06 AM

I don't hate authority, I do however question it. Most people who seek positions of authority do so for the wrong reasons.

To quote,

"Those who seek power are not worthy of that power" - Plato

I believe you have to look into peoples motives for every action, and account for it's intention. Otherwise someone is going around doing whatever they want without consequence, and that is never good. Ever.

ThePhanastasio 06-12-2011 01:12 AM

I'm not a fan of authority in many areas where I view it to be unnecessary. For example: I'm not a huge fan of authority regulating victimless "crimes" and things of that nature.

If it's authority that's in place to ensure that people are protected, that's fine by me. Authority that takes away your right to choose what you will and will not do personally which affects only you - that's going a bit too far.

captaincaptain 06-12-2011 07:06 AM

I'm not a fan of authority when it gets too powerful or becomes uncontrollable. Laws put in place to give law enforcement agencies seemingly limitless power are not good for civil liberties.

CanwllCorfe 06-12-2011 10:16 AM

No - it does not bother me.

P A N 06-12-2011 10:29 AM

i just think sh*t rolls down hill, and if the people at the top are not good at commandeering circumstances, then it's their subordinates that assume the role of the clean-up crew.

and, generally speaking, these days the authority figures are not capable of a cognizance which can envelop the matters at hand.

^IMO.

FETCHER. 06-13-2011 02:33 PM

As paloma said.

If I can't take the authority seriously (like beta teachers at school) I will completely abuse you and make you regret being in the position to 'tell' me what to do.

If you hold my respect I will befriend you and make your life easy and comply with the rules.

richie1 06-13-2011 05:58 PM

"Do you hate authority?"

Why you asking? You a cop?

Seriously, I don't hate authority, but I do hear so many stories of "abuse" of authority that it does cause me to initially "distrust" authority until the authority figure proves themselves worthy of my trust.

I'm disappointed at myself for not making that joke as much as I used to say it.

Mr November 06-13-2011 07:53 PM

I've never had a problem with authority, although I've always been very judgmental of it. It depends on where the authority is being derived, how it's being used, and what purpose it is serving. But I've never been one to give teachers a hard time. I'm willing to let a little bit of power corruption go since we're all only human. It's just about how far you let that go... and I'll never be anyone's slave.

I'm also pretty happy to cooperate with someone's authority if I've chosen to invest that authority over me to them.

Freebase Dali 06-13-2011 08:01 PM

Last time I've resented authority figures was in the military, because most of them were only authority figures because they accumulated irrelevant "points" that promoted them if their MOS happened to need more "bodies" in that role. Had nothing to do with the ability to lead and make proper decisions, and as a result, I ended up resenting the douche bags who weren't just bad at being leaders, but were inexperienced in life itself. The kicker was you didn't have an option to disobey them.

Now days, I don't really consider anyone an authority figure, aside from the obvious law-related enforcement agents. I wouldn't consider any forum-related stuff as "authorities"... I mean... anyone can tell a mod to fuck off and continue their unimpeded life elsewhere.
