Open Mic - HELP please

All signs in the universe have led to me doing an open mic this Friday.

Basically, I wound up at an open mic with mediocre to okay musicians last night (Tuesday) and a lot of the musicians I talked to let me play their instruments and told me I should absolutely do an open mic.

Then, today, my friend texted me asking me to do an open mic this Friday, because all of the attendees were anxious to hear my work.

Then, today also, my mother asked me why in the **** I'd not done an open mic yet, when I was tuning my guitar and fiddling around at her place.

SO, basically I want to know if my setlist is awful.

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Phish - Waste
Bitchfist Bukowski (ME) - Fall 2005
Bright Eyes - At the Bottom of Everything
Elliott Smith - 2:45 AM
Bitchfist Bukowski (ME) - Zarathustra 2010
The Mountain Goats - No Children

Thoughts?

I like the folk choices. What's your setup, vocals and acoustic guitar?

Yes, it's vocals and acoustic, with an additional mic if there's no a/e jack. I'm thrilled about this.

And thanks, man.

Excellent! I'd be thrilled if I was at an open mic night and one of the performers did this set (of course, I haven't heard your original material). On a side note, 2:45 AM is one of my favorite Elliott Smith songs. Wishing you the best of luck!

Good choices man, I personally faced with that setlist would want Aeroplane Over The Sea to be the closer. But that is such a small thing.

Good luck, just go out and play, just have fun. No point in worrying to much about it. Your music is your own thing you don't need validation from anyone just have a blast man!

They are letting you do a set list at an open mic? Nice!

Whenever I go to open mics they usually restrict to one song/poem whatever you have. So that others can take the stage.

My buddy does an open mic set once a month. He does the same songs all the time: RHCP - Breaking the Girl, Beatles - Rocky Raccoon, Why - Darla, and a song he wrote.

Looking at your list, I'd say thumbs up and go for it, but if you're in a place anywhere like us, you may want to say that such and such are cover songs..

The folks around here thought my buddy wrote "Rocky Raccoon" himself, and they hate his Why cover because it's about a chicken. I hate the bar we go to.

I wish you the best of fun on your night... Seems fine to me, and it should go over well no matter what the patrons and other musicians think. It's all in good fun.

LOL our open mic sucks. There's the bartender ... he takes a break from tending to play his 2 original songs. He's quite good at being awful ... "Poop eating girl... eatin my load... poop eating girl... stomach explodes... <la da da dee da>... POOP!" It's hilariously bad.

Then one of the regulars comes up, and he knows upwards of 100 songs. He plays for about 45 minutes, let's my friend go up for his 2-4 songs, and then goes back and plays until the end of the night.

At any given open mic night, there are no more than 20 people in the bar, and only 3 musicians, maybe 4. Tops. I've never, ever, ever heard somebody read poetry at an open mic night (I know that's how the idea started).

Wow I think that's the first acoustic open mic setlist that didn't have "Sex & Candy" by Marcy Playground on it, kudos. Only song I would change would be "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" to "Communist Daughter", I mean how often do you get to sing "Semen stains the mountaintops" in a song?

The open mics that I normally attend are poem heavy with just the odd person here or there singing a song.

The last open mic I went to even had a teen in high school read a letter that he wrote to his principal concerning bullying and he got a standing o for it.

A little background on that though, he just came to America from some African country last year and it showed how much his English has improved over the little time that he has spent here and it was deep/meaningful.
