...No way. Ieuan's my middle name, and I've never in my life encountered anyone outside my family who's even heard of the name before, let alone anyone who can spell/pronounce it properly.

How is it pronounced?!

Howard the Duck 08-01-2011 06:59 AM

Ewan?

Argh, I'm rubbish with writing pronunciations, but I guess it would be written something like ee-iyan. I'm not sure if you're supposed to drag the ee bit out or not. My parents don't, but my nan (who's full Irish) does.

Is it said like Ian? But an obscure way of spelling it?

Mykonos 08-02-2011 01:14 PM

I get the suspicion that it's closely linked to Ian (Wikipedia says it's from the name John, but it's a similar spelling to Ian, and they both mean God is gracious) but no, it's not pronounced much like it.

I heard somewhere that Ian is the Gaelic form of John. So you could be right.
