I'm moving to Dubai

Well technically Sharjah but Dubai is 15 minute away and is more recognizable. I figured I haven't attention whored in a while now and this definitively deserves some attention whoring. My life is about to be uprooted and shipped to god knows what parts of the world with their dubious views on morality and such,...

The money is supposed to be rather impressive, but I'm most excited about is the prospect of having an Olympic sized swimming poll right outside my doors and a gym in the same apartment building which is a hop away from the actual place of business. *shallow and lazy*

Who knows what the people I'll encounter there will be like... The work is 10h per day with the weekends off and a rotation cycle of 90 days there 16 back home...

Don't sound too bad aye...?

Your little mb brotha, going off in the big white world...never to return again....

Shit is going down probably during October or early November so enjoy what little time you have with me coz I don't know what type of censor/firewall system they got set up down there....*teardrop*

Wish me luck...<3

I do indeed wish you the very best. It doesn't seem too long ago that you was wondering where life was taking you and you felt unfulfilled in many ways.

The very best of luck to you Marijan.

Good luck my friend! Sounds super exciting...I'm completely jealous. Cheers! http://www.runemasterstudios.com/gra...ges/cheers.gif

Janszoon 09-26-2011 08:13 PM

Congrats man! Best of luck! And if you're ever in the Mirdif City Centre mall think of me—I designed a bunch of the signage for that place. :)

crash_override 09-26-2011 09:52 PM

Welcome to the hood.

stay black marijan <3

Blarobbarg 09-27-2011 07:28 AM

Congratulations, whoever you are. And I wouldn't worry too too much for the "dubious morality" of Dubai. It's one of the most excessive, capitalistic places on earth, even by the standards of the western world. I think theyre all more worried about their business than anything else. :p

Burning Down 09-27-2011 09:01 AM

Congratulations! You're moving up in the world! I heard Dubai and the surrounding area is just as Blarobarg said. One of my professors worked in Dubai for a year, and loved it. She said that at one hotel, there is a vending machine that dispenses gold bars (actually, that may have been in Abu Dhabi, but still!). Shows how much money is flowing through that place

I guess it would be good for you to do some research about customs and such, but you're smart so I'm assuming you've been doing just that. :)

FETCHER. 09-27-2011 11:29 AM

My aunt stays in Dubai, she loves it over there and has stayed for 12yrs or so. It's super beautiful. Although I haven't visited myself, she speaks highly of it over there. You'll love it. Good luck :) x

I'm jealous. Never been to Dubai myself but have heard amazing things. Hell, I'd go just to check out the Burj Khalifa.

djchameleon 09-27-2011 01:59 PM

Congrats, definitely moving on up there. As someone said earlier, I don't think you have to worry too much about sites getting blocked and what not.

^ Try not to let it spoil your experience, Marijan. ;)
I wish you the best of luck...and watch your back mate.
Latcho drom.

Many thanks, y'all. :) My boss brought back some pictures last week and the place looks suspiciously like America, with a lot more sand of course. Not a bad thing...:)

They do block some sites as far as I know, but I'm hoping ultrasurf will take care of that problem. I know I don't post much but I'm not ready to call it quits just yet...:)

I don't think the restriction on alcohol use will affect me much, but I do wonder if you can get some quality acid down there...http://www.gay.hr/forum/images/smilies/think.gif

Anyhoo, I'll keep you updated, whether you want it or not...:D

Howard the Duck 09-28-2011 10:43 PM

i have a friend who was stationed there

not much of hot women there - you're bi, IIRC?

i have a flight stewardess friend who goes there often, and she says it's pretty hot in the afternoon, and pretty dry desert-esque heat

i suppose if you're going in the winter, it won't be too bad

adidasss 09-29-2011 12:20 AM

Nope, plain ol' gay.

Howard the Duck 09-29-2011 12:28 AM

gr8, no problems then

mostly Pakistani men, though

adidasss 09-29-2011 08:15 AM

Lol, I wouldn't say there are no problems. I am definitely moving into a situation which is much less favorable from that the one I'm currently in. It's not exactly pleasant to consider that I am moving to a country where you can be sent to jail for being gay, so I will have to be very discreet about my sexual orientation but it is a compromise (a significant one) which I'm willing to make, albeit a temporary one, in order to secure a much more prosperous future. :/

Howard the Duck 09-29-2011 08:43 AM

The UAE aren't really that strict

they have laws against drinking as well, but i know of a lot of Arabians who drink

Congratulations on this exciting change :) ... minus the part about having to compromise. :/ Kayleigh's and Il Duce's words make your upcoming adventure sound likely to be a good one...and that's without even considering your lovely location close to pool and work!

And now I will bid you bon Voyage in the words of my favorite Vulcan:

Live long and prosper, Adidasss!

They do it openly and without fear of repercussion?

right-track 09-29-2011 01:33 PM

I've seen a lot of Arabs drink like there's no tomorrow...when they're not in their own country. I remember meeting a bunch of Kuwaiti nationals in South East Asia not long before the first gulf war and they were well bladdered.
When I say watch your back mate...I really meant it.
Being a foreign national makes all the difference. Don't trust anyone, least of all the police. You may think you'd be alright drinking, until some copper fancies an unofficial pay day. Same goes for other things too. Just be careful and don't put yourself in a situation you can't get out of.

Now I've scared you half to death...enjoy your experience. It'll be the best thing you ever did and it'll leave you wondering why the hell you spent all those years farting about at home like a useless, pathetic twat, wishing you were more adventurous.
Good wishes and good luck.

Trauma 09-29-2011 02:59 PM

Wow. Good luck man!

maybe not in the open - they are no pubs there

but there is no constant monitor on these sort of things, unlike the more fundamentalist Islamic states

Batty 09-29-2011 07:38 PM

Just relax and enjoy, I spent a year in Oman and 2.5 years in Brunei, both Moslem countries with no pubs etc. You'll be fine.

Scarlett O'Hara 09-29-2011 11:19 PM

Just been discrete and you will be fine! Wish you all the best for your move M!

Howard the Duck 09-29-2011 11:25 PM

it's a bit stricter than here I guess

we're supposed to be conservative, but it's more like liberal Islam - there are laws against sodomy but homosexuality is still practiced in the open (unless you happen to be the leader of the Opposition Political Party)

there are laws against gambling and drinking but most Muslims I know drink, and the lottery-style number betting shops are full of Malays (Malays are compulsory Muslims)

and as for pre-marital sex, there are millions of amateur sex videos on the Net and in pirated DVD centres featuring Malays

although most have adopted the headscarf and formless clothing, some dress even more daring than the non-Muslims

only hardline rule here? Malays cannot convert out of Islam - they'll put them in a minimal security prison for brainwashing
