I have one family member, which is great at Christmas because it means I can dote on them, although this year I'm rather strapped as tuition and two months of rent just came out of me.

Mum gets:
Bathrobe/slippers
Gotye album
Up dvd
Egg frying pan
Awkward Family Photos puzzle

and hopefully a bottle of riesling, if I can find a good one around town.

bob. 12-17-2012 12:40 PM

did you know that of all the grapes used to make wine....the riesling grape is the most most complex

Is it? I have sparse knowledge of wine as a result of my roomie taking a wine pairing course for culinary school. What I know about riesling is that it is awesome. I also know that port is bad and pinor noir tastes like hooves.

bob. 12-17-2012 12:44 PM

Riesling is the only wine that can be made both sweet and dry....and can be paired with any type of food because of this

Paedantic Basterd 12-17-2012 12:46 PM

Best paired with asian cuisine, such as curries or thai food (favourites). I love it because even the kabinett is sweet, light, and refreshing.

bob. 12-17-2012 12:47 PM

it is the only wine that does not give me headaches :)

It's the first wine I've ever liked, honestly. Drinks really easy, goes with everything.

I'm especially broke this season so I'm recording myself reading a variety of my favorite short stories, creative essays and poems then burning them on to discs and personalizing them to members of my family. Man friend gets a knit hat and sex, friends get knit hats and pot brownies.

Well, she hasn't heard of them before, but she does like Wire, Magazine, and the more accessible This Heat that I've showed her, so I don't know what the outcome will be.

Mother: Painting I did of my grandparents, she misses them greatly and had been asking me to do a portrait of my grandfather for ages. I did it from 12:00 to 6:00 in the morning a few days ago while everyone in the house was asleep so she wouldn't know about it.

Father: Still haven't got anything yet so I am going to think about it. He doesn't really have any hobbies so it might be whatever my mother things would be good.

Sister: I missed her choir thing recently and it was my fault so I would like to surprise her and get her something she really likes.

Frownland 12-21-2012 12:14 AM

For your Mayan descent friends the lot of you ought to consider getting them a new calendar.

Blarobbarg 12-21-2012 01:07 AM

Mom- Some assorted home-made scented soaps and candles, and a small painting singing the praises of espresso. All bought at a local small business, so that's cool.

Dad- A coffee mug shaped like an automatic pistol, and bacon flavored hot sauce. He's just that kind of guy.

Brother 1 (Age 20)- Also some assorted candies and such, and a collection of dried salamis and such. I'm thinking about getting him a gift card, too. He's the most impossible person to shop for, I swear.

Brother 2 (Age 17)- A small cord that he needed to hook his bass up to yet another new doohickey (he picked it out, I bought it), a few assorted gag candies (such as Tabasco chocolate), and a bottle of banana ketchup.

Brother 3 (Age 11)- Ice Age 4 DVD/Bluray/Digital copy.

Brother 4 (Age 10)- Olive Garden gift card. The boy is utterly obsessed with Olive Garden, and wants to take my mother out to dinner. He's a classy little guy.

Brother 5 (Age 9)- A LEGO set.

Best friend- A Zildjian hat.

I've also "adopted" a four year old boy in downtown Louisville whose family is struggling with poverty. I'm going Saturday to deliver a set of clothes, a warm blanket, a winter coat, and a "Break The Ice" game. I did the same thing last year and the grandma got pissed at me because I forgot something, so hopefully that doesn't happen this year.

That should be it. I'm gonna have a heart attack when I look at my bank account.

EDIT- Yes, I really do have that many siblings, though my 20 year old brother is technically not legally adopted.

Bloozcrooz 12-21-2012 01:46 AM

I really only have one person to shop for, and I'll do that this weekend at the very last minute I'm sure. I was going to be thoughtful and try an get a gift for everybody, but it just seems like a lot of effort. Gifts for or from other adults at Christmas time just seems like a waste of time, and money really. It just seems expected, and to me has very little meaning when thats the case. I place more value on a kind word from a stranger than a gift thats only being given more out of obligation than anything else. Long as my special someone is happy I'm happy, and expect nothing nor want nothing from anyone.

I bought my brother a flannel shirt since I try to dress him across continents. He's 15 and goes to a nerdy private school so I make it my civic duty to make him as cool as possible. I got my mom a bunch of kindle books and my dad a cookbook. God I miss them....
I got one of my roommates vegan marshmallows and one of them olives since I ate all of theirs. I took my best friend and my god family (they came an visited me from the states) out to dinner.
