Help Vanilla Before She Comes 2
 

Okay so I want to get a smart phone but I need help choosing what phone will be the best one for the features I want and the price I can afford.

Basically I can afford ~NZ$200 wholesale. The features I want is:

* Camera: absolute min 5 px
* Wifi, 3G
* All the applications I can
* Decent sized screen with touch keypad only.
* Colour is not a big deal, pink would be amazing but whatever is fine.

What are your suggestions and why? I need something that is going to last but doesn't have to be the top of the line with features either. Voice recognition would be good but you need money for that.

Oh come on guys, I really need help here. :(

1 - Camera MP isn't as important as the optics. You can take better pics on a 2MP than a 5MP if you're using super high quality glass. Examples include 8 vs 11MP cameras on Nokias and competitors respectively. Guy at my workplace researched phone cameras extensively and bought a nokia for the best pictures he could get. He passed over the 11MP cameras for that reason.

2 - Everything has that now.

3 - Get an Android phone. You can't afford an iPhone and Windows Phones aren't as good for app choice. Good enough for most though.

4 - If you want a larger than average screen you'll have to pay more. If you want a 3.7 inch screen thats pretty standard now.

5 - Marketing maxim for how to sell ANYTHING to women - Shrink it and Pink it. End result = You pay more and feed the corporate machine in being sexist and stupid. Don't bother with colours, just get something black or white. It looks classier anyway.


As for actual defined choices, honestly, I've been looking at phones myself recently and when it comes down to it, in the past 2 years phones haven't actually gained any advantages over each other. Phones these days come down to battery life, size, memory capacity, and UI design (IE HTC Sense interface vs Vanilla Android interface).

UI design is universally pretty good on android. HTC and Samsung have the best of it though. Battery life you'll have to check reviews, Size is obvious, memory capacity is obvious.

The faster processors and 4G connectivity on the more fancy phones is worth jack ****. Both of them just waste battery and jack up cost, unless you're really hot on tech and have a defined use for the extra power, I'd ignore those things.

In other words - Phones are all pretty similar these days. Just go down to the shop and look at a few, ask about battery CAPACITY (Not battery life, they'll always tell you its "good", make sure you get the capacity number), check out whether the UI is intuitive for you, and then pick the one with the best plan. You're never going to find a touchscreen phone where its a case of "OMG THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER" unless you're paying an awful lot more money.

Thank you so much for that. It cleared so much up in my mind because I'm a bit behind when it comes to these phones. I definitely want an Android and will go for either Samsung or HTC. This is wicked I have a way better idea of what I'm looking for now!

the samsung galaxy is a great smart phone, I'm sure I mentioned this one in Amandria's thread. If I was to pick any phone in the world except an iPhone it'd probably be this. Stay the fuck away from blackberrys.
