Smart girls wouldn't take a drink from a guy but it happens all the time.

It does go both ways. Your specific experience isn't a catch all rule. Just like what I'm talking about isn't how everyone conducts themselves but a large majority do. You only expect a thank you at the end of the night because you sir are a gentleman. There are plenty of douchebags that want at the very least a kiss at the end of the night for paying for the date. By date 3 they are expecting their date to give it up for them paying for 3 dates. Women expect guys to pay for their dates especially if they were the ones asking for the dates in the first place. I'm sure I can pull up studies showing how many women want their dates to pay for the date they go on. Yes this has changed somewhat with the economic climate but there are still princesses out there that will not go out with a guy unless he's paying for the date.

Buying women drinks?

F*ck that, it's not the 1950s anymore.
Either get your round in or f*ck off, and that applies to both sexes.

lol @ the news story, that is ridiculous.

Personally when I was single I hated it when guys offered to buy me a drink and I promptly turned them down for the reason that I would feel as though I "owed" them something for the drink and also because it feels like it's a way of forcing you to give them your attention in a way. If you like someone and want to get to know them or "make a move" so to speak, why not talk to them or something instead of "buying" their attention? This goes for either sex.

It's not so much buying their attention, it's more about you being in a bar/club and offering to get them a drink that would help them relax a bit so they aren't so nervous/shy about talking to you in the first place. I know that only applies to shy people in general but I think that's where the custom comes from. When people have some liquid courage they are more open and likely to be talkative.

I suppose, but women can make the choice themselves of whether or not they want to open up to get to know someone. You don't need to "buy" them the chance to open up and be talkative with you, if somebody wants some liquid courage they can buy it themselves/make that decision for themselves. This is how I just personally feel when people offer to buy me a drink.

If the shoe was on the other foot. I would be all like woohoo free drink and I have the choice to do whatever I want with it. So if I don't feel like talking to the person that was silly enough to buy me a drink without first talking to me to see if I'm even interested in the slightest then I would thank them and walk away.

If someone offers to buy me a drink I'll chat to them but tbh the only people who have bought me a drink are other men at football matches. Though I remember I was seeing this girl once and she turned up with a crate of Carlsberg for me .

I had a phase where that was my goal for the night to see how many women I can get to buy me drinks. My record was 4 in one night but it wasn't easy.
