Most of this will be related to work, because that's really most of what my life is right now. And I love it.
- Negotiated an 8k raise.
- Negotiated a side contract prospect for next year worth several thousand.
- Headed up and achieved various high-impact technological improvements at work, all very visibly and to great contribution to the company, and ending up being the key consultant for business decisions relating to technology at the company.
At the beginning of 2013, I had only been at my job for 3 months. Prior to that, my only career-related experience was of a lowly military pawn, not an independent decision maker in the private sector. To be honest, I wasn't very confident in myself in such a different context. But I managed to allay my fears and do more than I ever thought possible. It's a huge, huge boost for me to have put myself out there and achieve well beyond my expectations.
- Finally passed the 20k savings mark after almost a year of saving, and it's going up and up. Previous to this, I was only ever able to save right under 20k on a deployment in a combat zone, and it was never truly savings, nor was it ever a sustained thing. It would drain after deployment. Prior to the military, I was destitute. I've changed that, and my savings go untouched. My operating account is still funded comfortably at all times. I remember what it was like to have to write hot checks just to eat, and get swamped by payday loans. To say life is less stressful now is the understatement of the year.
- Did a full maintenance routine on my car, including the timing belt... Insanity right there... Rewarding in the end. Especially monetarily. Such a job would have cost thousands at a shop. Cheers to Google, and to some extent, my dad.
- Met my baby nephew for the first time, and realized that kids are great when they're not yours while also being family and not some kid in the grocery store. I can't wait until he's old enough for us to really hang out. That is the year that I have to achieve even more... try not to be a bad influence!
Overall, this year has been about success for me, but not in a superficial way. It has been about challenging myself and my previous assumptions of personal inadequacy as an individual who could take control over my life and excel in my endeavors. I had come from a background that doesn't have many good statistics attached to it, and to look back and realize just how far I've come and how much of it can be attributed to my own efforts, it truly inspires me to keep moving forward and taking on new challenges, because I think if this year has taught me anything, it's that the road ahead is going to be less painful because I've overcome my biggest hurdle: Myself.
