A Debate as Old as Time

is a hot dog a sandwich?

discuss.

Cuthbert 01-31-2015 04:34 PM

It's a sandwich.

Frownland 01-31-2015 04:35 PM

A hot dog is a piece of meat not a sandwich.

That's a Frankfurter.

A hot dog (also spelled hotdog) is a cooked sausage, traditionally grilled or steamed and served in a sliced bun as a sandwich.

Fair enough. Not gonna make things worse for myself. I've had a 'mare here.

I don't really care about the debate tbh. Hot dog on a bun = sandwich ftr.

Would agree.

When I saw the title, I thought somebody had dragged out the Beatles-Stones rivalry again.

Key 01-31-2015 06:56 PM

It is not a sandwich.

Chula Vista 01-31-2015 06:59 PM

A hot dog is a hot dog. Duh. Just like a hamburger is a hamburger. They both exist in and of themselves. Iconic. Timeless.

The big debate comes when you bring subs, grinders, and hoagies into the mix.

You're under the assumption that a hot dog bun is two pieces of bread. Last I saw, a hot dog bun is one large piece of bread folded into a bun, thus only making it one piece.

Mondo Bungle 01-31-2015 07:05 PM

It's a wrap

Ninetales 01-31-2015 07:07 PM

is a wrap a sandwich tho

Gyro sandwiches use one piece of pita but they're still considered sandwiches.

^Also, open face sandwiches only use one piece of bread and are still considered a sandwich.

I think these are better for discussion:

So the next time I'm ordering a hot dog from some place, should I now say I want a hot dog sandwich? I have never in my life heard it be called a hot dog sandwich.

DwnWthVwls 01-31-2015 07:24 PM

It wouldn't be incorrect, it'd would just make you look sillier than usual.

Key 01-31-2015 07:27 PM

I will admit that there are reasons why someone would call it a sandwich, but i just don't see it. Also, the toppings. As far as I know, ketchup, sauerkraut, and relish don't seem to be traditional toppings for a sandwich. I could be wrong.

Chula Vista 01-31-2015 07:28 PM

Speaking of grinders....

When I lived back east this place was a 5 minute walk around the corner from us. So good.

If you go to Colombia pineapple and potato chips are very popular hotdog toppings. I don't think condiments matter.

One of these just opened within minutes of our house. F*ck!

They are so good but so bad for you at the same time.

Key 01-31-2015 07:49 PM

We have like 2 Jersey Mikes in our area. I've never been, but so many people have said it's delicious.

Their steak and cheese is worse than the big H.

Key 01-31-2015 07:52 PM

I've been meaning to try it out. I'm a huge fan of a delicious sandwich. We have an irish pub close down a little while ago. "A Terrible Beauty" was the name and it had the best reuben sandwich i've ever eaten.

Wtf? You have Jersey Mikes? That's crazy.

I had no idea they expanded beyond NJ.

Key 01-31-2015 08:01 PM

It seems like the company has been doing well since the Quiznos where the new Jersey Mikes is located closed down.

ladyislingering 01-31-2015 08:04 PM

Who the fuck names a sandwich shop Quiznoz? I always thought that was just a terrible name. All I can think of is snot.

Or you walk in and it's some kind of gross game show setting where you have to guess the viral infection based on the consistency of the mucus.

DwnWthVwls 01-31-2015 08:42 PM

I'm surprised you've never seen that before WD. I'd love to try it also.

I also wouldn't put lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise on a PBJ, but that doesn't make it not a sandwich.
