Same with metal. In high school if you couldn't at least name the Big Four of thrash then I didn't want to talk to you. Now I only hate deathcore kids. Although that's probably as much for the ear gauges as anything else.

Well, sure one of mine is from Longfellow! Doesn't mean you have to invent it, just choose to use it.

I always thought my more complete version of 90% of everything is **** had a nice ring to it,
and I've never really seen someone else say it so far.

I am a snob to people who like "everything" or stick to one genre. I am quite picky about what I listen to but I really don't have taste that is mind blowing.

I can enjoy just about anything in a background music sort of way. I certainly don't go out of my way to listen to everything and the number of artists in my music library is less than a hundred.

You and I know damn well that most people that say this do NOT listen to anything.

Huh?

I was just having lunch and they had the typical bull crap junk playing in the place and it was nice background music while I read and ate.

What I meant to say is that while you might actually listen to anything (but in the background), most people who say it really don't, that's why it's so annoying when people say it :c

I agree, i had a similar argument with Janzoon whe he said he liked anything..
ive always thought that was a safe answer to hide a lack of music knowledge but in his case, he actually did like everything maybe Chula is the same.

I think Jansz is well over that teenage/twenty-something period where most people say that. He's just been listening to so many different kinds of music for so long that he's probably just expanded his taste to the point where he might actually listen to just about everything. He's like 73 after all.

I concur.^ I am at the point where favorite artist, fav song, fav band, and the word fav are for 15 year old school girls.

Not to worry: it's enough to have a face, body and personality that is.

Perhaps a better question would be "what sort of music do you prefer"?

You can get away with it here if you can prove that you're clergy.

And the tax exemption is a plus too...

There's a reason why they call them Catholic schoolgirls! ;)

Janszoon 03-03-2015 08:53 PM

I can be sort of a music snob in certain contexts. Not toward people who just aren't that into music, but toward fellow music geeks who seem deliberately very narrow-minded. For example, hip hop or metal fans who obsess about artists adhering to the genre playbook and scoff at artists who push the envelope.

That exactly is the better question. Because even if you listenes to pretty much every genre, you'll still probably prefer some over others, or at least listen to some more than others.

Do they still have the policy where they censor out cuss words in the CDs that they sell?

Guybrush 03-04-2015 07:13 AM

I don't consider myself a music snob, but I probably do come across as one when discussing. I don't often rip on bands or artists - I think people should make the music they want to make and you're free to like whatever you wanna like, but I do tend to think that music is special in that it's an art form where the more you know and the more tools and tricks of the trade you can employ - or the more you can push boundaries - the less interested people are going to be. It's tragically ironic. I think of the vast majority of music consumers as people who'd turn up their noses at the most exquisitely sophisticated dish prepared by the most skilled chef because it's not the hot dog they're used to.

I think if you call yourself a music lover, that should mean you've made an attempt to enjoy music in various forms and through that process has somewhat broadened your horizon beyond that of people who are not particularly interested in music. To return to my analogy with the food, I'm not saying hot dog isn't good, but if you're a real food lover, you'd also like the fancy gourmet meal. Or you would at least be interested in a taste.

No, I'm basically all digital now. Occasional CD here and there. That's kind of why I asked, because I haven't shopped in their music section in a looooong time. That policy was one of the major reasons. I'm too good to buy censored CDs, hence my snobbery.

I'm not sure if they still sell censored copies of cd's, but last time I checked, they hardly sell any hip hop or "parental advisory" records at all. Seems racist a bit. And I buy Cd's all the time. Just this past week, I bought five.

But I try not to rub it in too much.

Well you don't have to be a dick about it, but don't you find yourself thinking that your music taste is better than someone who only bothers with Top 40 radio? Objectively it might not make sense, but can you really say you don't feel the slightest bit superior in that respect?

I see it as being more invested in music, because even though there are some people who are all up on the top 40 stuff, the majority of them are passive listeners.

Neapolitan 03-05-2015 09:44 PM

I don't see why I have to consider myself a snob when I hear a band play horrible music. :p:

I am not the type that likes everything I hear and likes every band/artist in music. I do consider myself passionate about music, and I figure my hate runs equally deep as my love for certain things music-wise. It's usually the personality of an artist or musician I can't stand before I start to dislike their music.

Music snobbery isn't about disliking a band or type of music it's when you look down on someone for liking music that you dislike. I do my best not to transfer my feeling of a band to their fans. I am usually the recipient of a music snobbery than a perpetrator. :shycouch:

Yes, in some way I do feel my tastes are superior to the average music consumer. My taste is the result of years of dedicated and often challenging listening. But I'm not sure that necessarily means that I get more enjoyment out of my taste than they do theirs .. I probably do, but I can't really know. I feel it is ultimately about what you get out of it and if someone gets something out of listening to something, I generally respect that, whatever it is.

Plankton 03-06-2015 08:28 AM

You could almost look at one's musical education in an academic sense, in that a person with years of calculus knowledge would surely look at a person who only has basic arithmetic knowledge with a bit of contempt.

I'm the same way. But that doesn't mean I won't totally enjoy being in a club and listening to the house band play Brick House, or Oops I Did it Again.

I'm trying to visualize a club with a house band but all I can picture is 1940s dance halls.
