Can we please start acting like rational human beings?

Some of you know where I stand w/r/t debate. I think it's a good thing. Debating helps me to understand other people's positions, and it allows me to apply rigor to my own logic. There have been people here who I have disagreed with in the past, but I'd like to think that I, and hopefully my opponents have been able to keep an even keel, and not take things too personally.

But, you know what? This forum, being among my favorite places on the internet, has really made me sad of late. It seems like no one can discuss anything before people start throwing flaming vitriolic **** at each other. Must every topic end up with wanton ad homineming everywhere? Irrationality isn't justified because you think someone is a piece of **** for their point of view. Maybe they are, but you should articulate your logic before you make yourself look like an idiot.

I mean, ****, if you want to argue, great, but try to remain civil. And if you think I'm full of **** in this post, you should tell me why, rationally.

Key 05-27-2015 08:32 PM

This wouldn't be MusicBanter if we were all civil. Humans have a natural tendency to argue with one another. History at this forum does show that the people in arguments tend to be cool with each other even after going through the challenges of an argument. I really don't think many people here actually legitimately hate each other.

YorkeDaddy 05-27-2015 08:34 PM

So basically you made this topic because quite a few members got pissed because one specific member called for the death of a 15 year old.

I think your concerns are misplaced because **** like that isn't really all that common here because only a select few members would ever say something so vile.

DeadChannel 05-27-2015 08:35 PM

Nevertheless, these huge pseudo turf wars, that accomplish nothing and change no one's mind, are really getting on my nerves.
And, again, I'm all for people debating.

EDIT: Ninja'd

I made this topic because of a lot of things, but yes, that was the breaking point.

Then, instead of putting her on ignore and calling everyone who disagrees with you a piece of ****, you should maybe try to refute her.

Oh, and I'm not taking sides. Lil's debating was pretty bad as well.

Yes, that's what an argument is. Which is natural when you're at a forum with hundreds of members discussing their opinions. We're not all going to agree with each other on everything all the time. That'd be boring as hell.

DeadChannel 05-27-2015 08:42 PM

You're missing my point. I think members disagreeing with each other is a good thing. A very good thing. I jist wish people didn't always have to make it so personal.

I disagree, rationally.

Key 05-27-2015 08:43 PM

If it wasn't personal, it wouldn't be opinionated.

Why would I waste my time doing that? She won't change her mind and I won't change mine, the only thing that would've done was make me even angrier. And yes, that issue was very black and white so I have no regrets or apologies to give out to anyone.

That's not true. People can be passionate about something without logically fallacious name calling. Actually, name calling contributes nothing to that type of discussion, and gets your point of view nowhere. It just means that people are yelling at each other as loudly as they can with their ears plugged. This is pointless.

Edit: Ninja'd again.

What's the point of getting in the argument then, if neither you nor your opponents have any interest in considering the other side's points? Also, two wrongs don't make a right. Also, without taking sides, "that issue was very black and white" is just an empty assertion. You still need to demonstrate why it's so black and white before any of this is worthwhile.

Key 05-27-2015 08:49 PM

Well I didn't know you were referring to name calling. Obviously that isn't right for debate, however my point still stands. And now this thread is officially ironic.

Well, you know, name calling and general lack of civility.

You mean, it's ironic that this thread has turned into a debate? I dunno, sort of the point was to start a dialogue, or whatever.

Frankly, with the simultaneous activity of certain members of this board, these things are just going to happen. The only way they're not going to happen is if the mods start getting real ban happy, or people start to leave. Either way, people are going to have to be inactive from this site for it to happen.

Best bet for you is to just avoid the threads when they happen.

I generally try to stay out of inane threads and discussions, especially the constant bickering. I've been around MB for a long time and there's still some great discussion going on (see re: homeostasis for a current example). It generally happens in a very few threads, but that tiny bit of activity is what keeps me here at the moment.

The rest of MB, particularly the uncivil bickering, is trash to me. And this site has been losing a lot of members who feel the same way up to very recently, I suspect.

I don't think MB belongs to those who contribute to the inane bickerings and drama. I know it seems like it does - and has for a long time - but I don't think it should.

Trollheart 05-28-2015 05:15 AM

I haven't read that thread, and don't intend to, but I thought namecalling and insults got you at least warned, if not banned? I know I got a warning for something I said. Is this now because Urban is gone, nobody is getting infracted? There shouldn't really be a reason for sinking to namecalling, except in humour, you shower of useless bastards.

:)

Namecalling should really be seen as the lowest form of debate.
Cunts.

I can't conclude with empirical evidence that you're right - especially since I'm a new user - but the first feeling I got after reading your post is that you'd be correct. In fact, in my first post, I made sure to use really humbling language and "don't hate" because I was not sure how I would be received for just stating some bands I like!

I wish there was one totally inane thread that was constant non-stop bantering, like an amazingly inane topic or something and it would be pages long and metaphysically cover everything possible in the universe and every post would make you chuckle ... one can only dream.

We had it.. then a mod got pissy and locked it.

It was called Spill Your Guts.

Trollheart 05-31-2015 05:34 AM

That's very unfair, and also inaccurate.
The SYG thread started to get used for other things than just talking about people. It became almost a spam-thread. This was not what it was created for. It was due to this, and some fairly heavy drama that the thread was locked. There was a warning given beforehand, if I recall, but it was ignored. You can't blame any mod for that. If the SYG were reopened today I have no doubt that the same sort of inane pointless drivel would spill over it like cheap beer, so it's probably better that it stays closed.

But enough with the cheap shots at mods, DWV. It wasn't one who got pissy: a lot of people agreed the thread was getting out of hand.

The Batlord 05-31-2015 08:18 AM

I still miss it. Long live Kaos!
