Get the VIN and check it's history on line.

Since this will be a 2015 BMW, can I get a discount because it's depreciated a year already? The new ones come out in September. I've had a couple Fords; a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 and a '93 Thunderbird. The head gasket went in the T Bird, otherwise it was probably the best car I ever had. I'm trading a 2006 Honda Accord, the wheels are corroded and the tires won't hold air. I have about 10 cans of fix a flat in each tire. I'm hoping they'll give me $7,000 for the Honda and shave off 10,000 off the sticker price of the BMW.

The best depreciation period for value is like 3-5 years iirc.

That's probably not going to happen unless you have excellent credit. Even then there's only so much they can do.

I was basically forced to do this though, because my current car won't pass safety inspection (which is required in Canada for registration renewal) and the repairs are upwards of 4k.

Some advice if you're a first time carbuyer and you're going to a car dealer:

When they first drew me up, the total cost was 10k more than the price of the car, and I walked away without signing, taking a copy of the receipt with me, and researched all the **** they signed me up for and told me I would need. I then promptly had them remove a bunch of bull**** they had (particularly this thing called GAP protection which makes no sense with a down payment). I also had them remove this bs rust protection device that they put on the plan. When they had pitched it, it all sounded like it was part of the purchase and never brought up price, but then when I saw the itemized list and he was pressusing me to sign, I noped out of there. Monthly payments were going to be $250 before I got all the bull**** removed.

They let cute little blue monsters drive in Canada? :yikes:

Make sure there are no leans against the car, and get a new incense plate if it is used. You don't want to be held responsible for outstanding tickets connected to the license plate incurred by the previous owner. Look at the ground under the car for any oil, water, or gas leaks. When you're out for a test drive, let go of the steering wheel. If the car continues to go straight you're fine, but if it servers to either the left or right then you most likely need a front end alignment.

If it does that you only have half a car to return, assuming you survive!

It all depends on your situation. Having a vehicle that I can transport large objects in may occasionally be useful, but having a vehicle that I can fit in my tiny alley driveway or into a typical Philly street parking situation is something that's useful pretty much every day for me.
