The main reason they take it is for more money.

See above.

When I worked at the library, I would complete the section then do something they wanted us to do called shelf reading to make sure the books were neat and in order. I would go back and forth to different areas to make it look like I was shelf reading and organizing certain sections but I only did that when the head librarian was around. As soon as she left, I would just put a magazine on a shelf and sit there pretending that I was still "shelf reading".

It's the same thing like picking up a broom and sweeping a section longer than you should just to kind of waste time after doing the main thing that you were supposed to do but you have to keep moving to make yourself look busy even after you finished your task. Yes I lack incentive but I get my tasks done! I just didn't like going above and beyond for minimum wage. There was no incentive for me to do it. No talk of being offered more money or a better position and the places I worked at there wasn't any moving up from the position I was at.
I was under the impression this was a current thing. I always worked hard at everything i've done, because the accomplishment is something that pleases me. I have worked several retail jobs along with my current place of employment and I always give one hundred percent because I was always thankful to have a job. Different Strokes.

Pretty much this.

No one wants to be a manager in the service industry. That's something you get stuck with for whatever reason and now you don't have any better options, but it's more money than continuing to eat **** as a grunt so you do it. You can't tell me you truly wanted to be a manager of a thrift store.

Oh no no, you're exactly right. But I also felt it was a good resume booster. I've been able to include "management training" and other great things as a result. That's more important to me than anything.

When I was a kid I used to shovel driveways for the elderly neighbors on our block. (back in New England) I always did a pristine job to the point of lining up the edges so they matched. Kinda messed up in hindsight but I always got great tips, and now I'm the last man standing in a company that 2 years ago had almost 40 employees.

Bottom Line: Give 100% passion and commitment to everything you do in life, whether it's shoveling snow, building the perfect Whopper, having sex, or debating with Frowny.

I've shoveled my fair amount of snow also, but it was free and my dad would have kicked my ass if I asked for a dime. I hate to see any small business fail in California, conglomerates seem to be taking over the Universe. Pretty soon we're gonna end up going to Starbucks to get a haircut and watch a movie with our Latte.

What is it with you not wanting to hold other people accountable? These people are taking hours away from other employees who do care and do work. No thanks, if you wanna be useless then stay the fuck home.

Found out from my friend that he disappeared for three months because he went to jail. I figured he either got institutionalized or died due to his drug use, so that's kind of a relief I guess? I don't know any of the details of his arrest yet.

I agree with all of this, ofc life gets in the way sometimes. I have days where im less productive than id like to be. I was talking about the consistently lazy *******s (i thought you were too).
