That was a sincere outburst of admiration for her absolute clarity on an issue where so many lacked it
I used to have a much, much lower opinion of her, as reflected in this post from over a year ago

Back then I let myself be influenced by things like my irritation about adult Harry Poter fans, my (likely well-founded, let's be honest) prejudice against her as a writer of fiction and my reflexive support for expressions of gender nonconformity, of which she was reported to be an enemy if not THE enemy.
But the more I've read up and thought on the activist movements purporting today to stand for gender nonconformity, the less apparent it was what was wrong or offensive or hateful about anything she said on the topic. The blog she posted to her site is incredibly thoughtful and fair. Nobody is obliged to agree with every word she says as she is the first to acknowledge, but reading it with an open mind is more than enough to dispel widespread caricatures of her as a conservative bigot.
One of her chief worries is precisely about the freedom of gay and lesbian children to be gender nonconforming. |
