Woke up to alarms blaring out today. Been here since 2019 so it's not the first escalation I'm living through but this is far more serious than the previous ones

Christ, man. What a way to start the day.

Yeah my day sucked. Spent a lot of it on Twitter and Telegram, looking at Hamas videos showing butchered Israeli civilians (the latest death toll is at 300 and is predicted to rise further), gunmen spitting on the mutilated corpse of a dead girl, a testimony from an Israeli woman saying that her 9 yo nephew called her saying the gunmen killed mom and dad and now he and his sister are hiding etc etc.

And seeing my Montreal friends sagely retweeting this and similar nuggets of wisdom https://twitter.com/MomodouTaal/stat...45803620581447

Not that this is what I'm sad about today but I've come to suspect I no longer have anything in common with my own milieu of Montreal millennial bobos.

I envy the confidence of lefties seeking to exculpate Hamas.

Quote:

Hamas could have killed FAR more people if it wanted to, that clearly wasn’t point of operation and IMO they killed only as many civilians as necessary to gain control of Gaza border settlements through fear

This is what she wrote yesterday, amid a developing situation and a death toll of 200 or 250. Now the death toll is at 600. Is it enough to concede that killing people was a big part of "the point" of the operation and of Hamas's entire raison d’être?

Not one of my favorite writers but one of the last decent and dignified public figures we have

Yeah that's seriously pathetic. I'm mad at myself for ever bothering to try to have an actual debate with this guy.

That was a sincere outburst of admiration for her absolute clarity on an issue where so many lacked it

I used to have a much, much lower opinion of her, as reflected in this post from over a year ago

Unlike the postmodernist Carter, she's not a big fan of the idea that gender roles are socially constructed... Should I go on?

Back then I let myself be influenced by things like my irritation about adult Harry Poter fans, my (likely well-founded, let's be honest) prejudice against her as a writer of fiction and my reflexive support for expressions of gender nonconformity, of which she was reported to be an enemy if not THE enemy.

But the more I've read up and thought on the activist movements purporting today to stand for gender nonconformity, the less apparent it was what was wrong or offensive or hateful about anything she said on the topic. The blog she posted to her site is incredibly thoughtful and fair. Nobody is obliged to agree with every word she says as she is the first to acknowledge, but reading it with an open mind is more than enough to dispel widespread caricatures of her as a conservative bigot.

One of her chief worries is precisely about the freedom of gay and lesbian children to be gender nonconforming.

Synthgirl 10-11-2023 06:06 AM

If she's not a conservative bigot, she's clearly not above allying with and praising them.

And for some of those people, "bigot" is generous, these are straight up fascists.
