Kubrick cast D'onofrio based on him meeting him as a bouncer at some club. Talk about the perfect Hollywood story.
I wasn't around at the time, so I guess I can't really say, but I think that movie had a lot to do with changing people's perceptions about the training standards of American troops. I'm sorry, but if a soldier can't take a punch in a safe, training environment, then they have no business being in the military.

Have ya seen the movie? Pyle was broken down in a totally sadistic manner. His CO should have realized early on that he was pretty much retarded and had him discharged. Instead he chose a strategy that resulted in this.

Training soldiers is a discipline which has been practiced and refined for millenia. If it required touchy feely, liberal intervention to maximize its effectiveness, then I imagine it wouldn't have evolved the way it did. Social liberalism is great for society in general, but when it comes to the armed forces, I'd prefer amoral pragmatism to dictate policy.

In today's military, Pyle would be discharged. He would be considered a danger to his compatriots.

Hell, you have a f*cked up big toe and you can get discharged these days.

But FMJ was about the Vietnam war. Different times.

The rum, port wine, beer and vokda got me pretty ****ing smashed, but my drunkenness did gave me a good idea for a new drone machine. It should be fairly simple to build, although the part with the lenses might be quite difficult and/or expensive to build if I can't find any second-hand.
