Oh and I've vaguely heard about the Atlanta Child Murders but please give me the best specific venue to educate myself (documentary, murderpedia page, podcast episode, etc.)

Honestly the best portrayal was in season two of Mindhunter. There are plenty of docs on the case, but they always lack some element of the bigger picture. I would start with the wiki article tbh.

The story has everything - murder, coverups, toying with police, convicting the wrong person, corrupt cops, a mayor that doesn't want to announce crucial information about the suspect to the public because it would look bad for re-election or whatever, the KKK, etc. You'll see.
