True story: fans arrived in Paris I think it was. Loud, happy, bit rowdy but nothing bad. Came across this woman with a flat tyre. Lads all pile out, change the tire and off they go. Welcome from Ireland. That's the way to make your mark when you're on tour.

I don't think there have ever been any instances of Irish fans getting in trouble, getting arrested, anything like that. Nearest thing to anything controversial was one idiot who fell over a plant on national TV. Made him a minor star.

I think there was trouble at Euro 88 involving Ireland, they were playing England though. Been loads involving Celtic fans as well, OK not the ROI national team but they seem to think they're Irish.

The ROI supporters are OK.

But I understand it. 70s, 80s and 90s they did not behave well in Europe. Hooliganism, the English disease. You no doubt remember Landsdowne Road in 1995 TH. France 98 was a real turning point and the fan base changed. Used to be shaven heads and Aquascutum, now it's quiffs and knight costumes. They are a bit better now, but occasionally you still see violence and once you have that reputation its hard to get rid of.

Ireland v England has always been a flashpoint. And yes I remember Lansdowne; saw it on the telly. Disgraceful.

I think usually the Celtic thing is when they play Rangers is it not? The Old Firm Clash (literally) and that's all about the old chestnut, Protestants v Catholics. I'm not familiar with the antics of Celtic supporters, but yeah, I was talking about those supporting the national Irish team.

Fair enough I can understand that if you're not interested, but teams are a big part of the local community so it's understandable. I just saw the parade in Wolverhampton today, it looked great, it can lift the whole city.

Not just Rangers, for example they've booed and chanted through minutes silences when not playing Rangers before, and once threw so many bananas on the pitch at a black player the game actually had to be stopped to clear all the fruit off.

Yeah the Old Firm is rooted in religious bigotry but not so much now imo, any sectarian policy doesn't exist at Rangers any more, half their players are Catholics. It is more to do with identity (British or Irish) and politics, Rangers being the pro British club of the establishment and monarchy, Celtic being the 'rebel' club founded for Irish immigrants. Lots of things overlapping in it all, especially since the referendum and Rangers financial trouble, its quite interesting I think.

The ROI were good at the Euros, as were the Welsh and the NI supporters. England not so much

How is it understandable? The band The Roots are big hometown heroes in the city I live in, but nobody expects every single resident to be a fan of them, watch their concerts on TV, keep abreast on the news about them, and attend parades held in their honor.

There's no question that the old rivalry between Ireland and England is always going to be hard to get rid of. I mean, even now, people (me included) resisted the idea of your queen coming here. I mean, **** her: what has she to do with us? She's a redundant relic of a state oppression system that all but tried to force the Irish into annihilation, but of course all that's forgotten about now.

Still hate the bitch, sorry if that's crossing the line with you.

But rivalries aside, I'm talking about the general behaviour of fans, and even were we in the WC this year and our guys met your guys, I'm going to lay good money that if there was any trouble it would have been started by your lads. They have improved, undoubtedly, but the Irish fans never had to. They were always great. Well, as long as I've been following footy, which is from Italia 90 or so.

Nordies are of course a different matter, but they have their own fans. If they ever make it to a world or European championship!
