Birds

Are there birds where you live/work? Do you enjoy hearing birdsong or does it drive you mad? Do you feed the birds where you live/work? I used to have to go out and feed the birds that would come into our garden, just to keep Karen happy, but over the years I've actually grown to like it. It's nice to see them fluttering down after you've filled up the feeders, and yeah, birdsong is lovely. Apart from magpies, when they screech and cackle at each other in the small hours and keep you awake.

Yes there are birds where I live. Lot of crows, they're pretty brutal. A few weeks ago, there was a dove that made a nest in my backyard and we found its ravaged corpse and a bunch of crow **** in our yard. Quite a variety around here as well.

Question: does anyone live in a place without birds?

Other than pigeons, I'd say those who live in the heart of the city don't see that many. I don't know of course, but in Dublin city centre that's about all you see birdwise, pigeons and maybe the odd crow. It's nice out here, listening to starlings and sparrows and seagulls. We get the crows, magpies and plenty of pigeons too of course. I do wonder about a new bird I've been seeing a lot of, kind of mostly grey with some black. Thought it was a crow, but they're completely black, aren't they? Crows are pretty damn cool. I love the way they stare at you as if to say "Yeah? You ****ing want some?" before flying off.

Oh yeah: we're getting ducks coming up here now too, two in particular. Really fun feeding them bread, and now they seem to know me. Whereas before they would walk off and I'd have to go after them, throwing bread pieces like some demented Johnny O'Appleseed, now when they see me they come to me for the bread. Love ducks.

In college there was a bird that would hang out on the fence close to my window and it would hang out and sing to the music I was listening to. We jammed a few times.

Keep an eye out for sparrow hawks and herons. Especially herons if there are guys where you live who have ponds with fish in their gardens.

I think there may be one guy. Herons wouldn't come into Darndale: the local pigeons would kick its ass and send it on its way.

I don’t know much about birds but I love them.

I tried to teach myself a little ornithology but to no avail. I’m within quick reach of the woods with a lot of pine, oak, and other trees like maple and magnolia and the woods have birds like blue jays and cardinals and if you go deeper woodpeckers and huge osprey. People say there’s bald eagles but I’ve never seen one.

There’s also swamps nearby and the birds are much easier to hear than see. Herons hang out in the open seemingly unafraid.

Then the beach has what you would expect. Pelicans are the craziest looking birds in my opinion. Herons also march up and down the beach. Sea gulls get a bad rap. It’s bad ass watching those things fish.

But yeah there’s a nice selection of birds where I live. I love to hear birds sing and I like composers who study bird songs.

I love the drama you can watch with birds. Bigger birds scare off smaller ones, small ones fight for a place at the feeder, mothers feeding their chicks etc. Saw two pigeons humping on our garden wall till I drove them off (we're a good Catholic family here, we'll have none of that thank you!), baby magpie checking out the garden before being called up into the neighbour's tree by its parents. Nothing quite as sad as seeing the little birds coming down to feed and finding the feeders empty, so that means out I go with seed, and quite funny to watch the cats totally disapprove of birds in their garden.

If you let your cats in your garden and there is a nest nearby you might see your cat attacked by the birds.

Millie has taken one or two down, Ritchie (god rest his soul) once brought one into the house and ran upstairs with it. Luckily it was still alive and I was able to get it out the window. Eddie once allegedly killed a pigeon or magpie (forget which) but I feel he just found it and sat beside it, all proud and Shark Tale-like, pretending he had killed it.

They've been attacked by magpies. Those dudes don't fear nothing. I watched two of them buzz and hassle a huge Alsatian dog in her garden. ****ing funny, even if I felt sorry for the dog, who is a real gentle creature.
