Family, by a hair. I've had friends that I would trust over a lot of louts in my extended family. But I've had "friends" that turned out to be cretins, too.

Dogs or cats?

Dogs. While dogs require a lot of care and cats you can leave alone for a couple of days as long as they have food, water, and a scratching post, dogs are usually kind and loyal, while cats have an attiude of "it's my universe, be glad I let you live in it, human."
