The Napoleon Thread
I've never had much of a grasp on Napoleon's history but I'm learning a bit of it atm and it's great and great generals and their conquests are always fascinating so if anyone has anything to say on the Napoleonic Wars or books that would be good to read then give it up.

I actually had no idea that book was about the Napoleonic wars. God damn it now I have to read a difficult Russian novel. **** you and your mother.

I’ve read a lot of the Horatio Hornblower series
They’re pretty nerdy but they’re also breezy and fun https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horatio_Hornblower |
I'm glad to hear you're exploring such an exciting period in European history, D&G, and Napoleon was a leader of extraordinary stature. But it wasn't all power and glory of course, and here's a book that fills in some everyday detail of what life was like in Napoleon's army as it headed into Russia:-
https://pictures.abebooks.com/isbn/9781900624053-us.jpg It's the real diary of a real guy who was really there: very authentic but tbh it's a slightly boring read, so if you want a quick summary," Napoleon's army was cold, disorganised and very hungry." If you don't want to get caught up in details, you can pick up some history from Abba too ;) |
The part where he stepped on a landmine is my favorite.

Didn't that happen in his kitchen, destroying the kitchen floor at the same time? Linoleum Blownapart |
A lot of people don’t know he was actually killed by a Mongolian donkey fart.

For the first time ever, I'm disappointed by D&G because he seems to have wilted under the tsunami of ridicule, deflection and willful misunderstanding that is the trademark of MB. Time to man up, D&G and plow ahead with your enthusiasm for Napoleon regardless of our united scorn! You should ask yourself, "What would Napoleon have done?"
For myself, I thought of this thread this morning as I read about a modern traveller arriving at a town on the island of Corsica (where N Bonapart was born): Quote:
Same book, but off topic: Spoiler for Some Essential French:
