Hm, is that just another name for Remembrance of Things Past? If so I've never heard it referred to that way, interesting. And yeah, that would take a ****load of time to read.

Oh yes, it is Remembrance of Things Past (or In Search of Lost Time). The first volume is titled as 'Du côté de chez Swann' which pretty much translates as Swann's Way. All volumes put together should amount to around 4000 odd pages? Yeah, I'm pretty much going all in!

Interesting that you're reading Three Lives. It's the sort of book I've imagined to read say, on a sunday afternoon. I'm no expert on American literature though, so there's a lot more waiting ahead of it! Do you find it a bit dated in terms of the topics and themes covered? I guess it's more so important for the history 100 years back and the writing style employed.

Wow, well good luck on the Proust. As for Three Lives, from what I've read it is a bit dated, but I was kind of expecting that. I think that's what you get reading an early 20th century lesbian's view on gender and feminism. Luckily you don't get too bogged down with the dated subject-matter because it's a relatively short work, and divided into three even shorter stories. But the style, Jesus Christ, it's amazing. It's nothing like I've ever read. That's why I bought it after all. I've also been reading a lot of Hemingway and other Lost Generation writers recently and figured Stein would be next step. I think it makes sense though that you would want to become more familiar with American literature before reading it, waiting will definitely heighten your appreciation for the work. After all, Stein was known for being more of an influencer than an actual writer.

After having finished Slaughterhouse 5 in a day (Meh overall, didn't like or dislike it), I'm moving onto the above.

You could try The First World War: A Complete History by Martin Gilbert. I'm not sure how it reads but my history professor reccommended it and Gilbert is a solid historian. I've done some snooping around and the reviews for it say that it's a bit of a narrative with anecdotal bits and whatnot so I don't know if you're looking for that kind of thing. If it doesn't sound intriguing then maybe try World War I: A Short History by Michael J. Lyons. It's the same kind of thing but more straightforward and seems to cover more ground as far as social, political, economic and "non-military" factors go.

If you haven't read All Quiet on the Western Front by Remarque then you need to do that. While it is a work of fiction and does not exactly cover some of the things you have specified, it is still one of most amazing books ever written about war and does the impossible by humanizing the perceived enemy.

I've seen the film. I posted this same question as my status on FB and got the advice to check out Guns of August. It was bundled on Amazon with The Proud Tower which claims to layout pre-war europe. I'm more excited for the latter.

Chipping through Notes from the Underground and All that is Solid Melts into Air at the same time. It gets old so I've been alternating between the books of merit and absolute trash. That got old even faster. I needed a good story and I found a great one. I'm halfway through it but its my favorite Chuck book. He rarely disappoints even though he's been writing terrible endings as of late.
