Life of Pi—I'm always a several years behind the curve when it comes The Big Book Of Year type books, but nevertheless I'm about two thirds of the way through this one and really enjoying it so far.

yeah it wasn't one of my favourites by him either.

yeah, I haven't seen the movie since it came out, and I'm guessing I was pretty young, but I usually read a few books at a time, and so far i've came to a halt with my other books. And have been concentrating solely on this. So far so good. It's awesome and I can see it turning into one of my favourites too :).

Got this one for when I finish the one above:

Haha love that book. Have you read the Zombie Survival Guide?

So, I've not been able to finish a book in awhile. I get to the very last pages of one and stop. I develop some weird anxiety that keeps me from reading the last of it. So far on that list are Vonnegut's Bluebeard, Kundera's The Farewell Party and Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer. I've recently opened this one:

This is like Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille on crack. What's funny is that it was written over 200 years before Bataille published his story, which just goes to show that we've been sick fucks for a lot longer since the advent of video games and the Internet.

I haven't read it yet either. :) I'll be starting it after I finish WWZ, which should happen tomorrow.

I'm re-reading the Chronicals of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson. Not my favorite books, but definitely the most influential that I've read. There are 7 of them. Highly recommend them to you...its just kind of a different way of thinking though they do drag on a smidgen.

LOVE both of those books. I've read P and P twice... it always gets me all sentimental, lonely, and i start talking like she writes.

After i read Interview with a Vampire i was obsessed with vampires for a good 4 months. Compared to this....Twilight is a funny joke. (well. it is anyway...but u get what i mean.) REAL vampire literature (heheh)

It always bugs me that there's no Latest book purchase thread, but I'm pretty excited about my last purchase ... and I still don't know with which to start.

All these writers and books, I got to know with the help of MB:

and another book by H.P Lovecraft, The whisperer in the Darkness.

....

and wandering through the music section, I felt like buying one for a change:

An interesting start, especially for a fantasy novel. Haven't gotten very far into it but it shows a bit promise so far.

His other books tend to vary in quality after Trainspotting, some are OK and others are just downright awful. None of them have that same charming spark that Trainspotting had. The only one that even comes close is The Acid House which is more of a collection of short stories and a novella. If you could find it at the library, I would recommend reading Trainspotting's sequel, Porno, but don't spend money on it because it's not really that good. His 2006 book, Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs was alright and was kind of like a more modern version of The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde. He put out a second collection of short stories called If You Liked School, You'll Love Work, but I didn't find it very engaging and never bothered to finish it before I donated it to a library. If you do go on to read Porno, be sure to read Glue afterwards because a few of the characters introduced in Porno made their debut in that one. It's sort of like Trainspotting but set maybe a decade later and less about recreational drug use.

Apparently Irvine Welsh is working on a prequel to Trainspotting called Skagboys, but I haven't been able to find a release date yet.

I've heard Irvine Welsh hasn't written a book as good as trainspotting, that it's a bit of a hit or a miss with him. I'll check those books out once I've finished trainspotting, I'm quite sad the rumours about his writing ability is true, as I seen Porno and the other in the book store, I was looking in to buying them after Trainspotting, but thanks for the advice and stuff, and I might just get them from the library instead :).

lol, I love this place.

Half the books posted in here look like they came from the discount bin at the used book store where they sell 20-sided dice in an old factory they converted into outlets.

adidasss 11-30-2009 12:31 PM

I didn't much like that one. It was easy enough to read, but it gave off that weird 60s vibe. Certainly not good enough to invest into reading the whole series.

I haven't read this book since senior year in High School. An incredibly existential view on the World that also served as inspiration for The Cure's song "Killing an Arab"

Although I read The Stranger 7 years ago, I still consider it my favorite book. I even already had the same behavior of that guy, to the point that my friends started to call me "Meursault" (tho I don't think that's a good thing, anyway it was a good thing for me).
