no rush....i'm gonna read the Eggers book HPD suggested, Stardust, and the new Welsh novel......got tons of time on my hands....so should be fairly quick

yeah she does have some good taste.....it was her unending ramblings of praise that got me to say "fuck it" and start the Songs of Fire and Ice series.....i went into those thinking it would be like most fantasy series....just not for me....have to admit i am hooked

I've stopped Ulysses and The Order of Things for the time being as to prevent suicide or hopelessness and started One Hundred Years of Solitude, which is god damned excellent.

The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski

Like most people, I was introduced to this series by the 2007 video game The Witcher which was probably a mistake because 2011's The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings completely blows it out of the water in every way imaginable. If you're a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire's bleak and gritty medieval setting then you'll definitely enjoy whatever world this is set in, but you'll have to get use to the fact that there isn't large exposition dumps to fill the reader in on the world and politics around them. This is the story of Geralt, a monster hunter, so unless there's a monster to kill, he could really care less about the politics of the land. It was a little hard at first, because we're so conditioned to expect that exposition dump in fantasy but the individual stories (it's a collection of short stories that helps set the tone and feel of the world) really pull you in and make you forget about the world at large.

Definitely would recommend if you've just burned through ASOIF and want something else to sink your teeth into, but want something a little different.

the thing i like most about A Song of Fire and Ice is the politics....might have top look into this....is it something that i would have had to play the game first to really get?

so i finished it this morning....i got a little teary eyed at the end....about a half hour later the whole thing settled on me....and while wiping tears from my eyes i said "fuck s/he was absolutely right"...i would say this is his best work that i've read....so good that i just ordered a deluxe hardbound edition of the original with all the drawings (mine was just text)....which i think i'll return to in a couple of months

everything about this is the perfect Fairy Tale....but very much for adults....i loved every character and almost texted you when two of them died

i honestly don't think i've been as emotional attached to book in some time

I feel you, mainly because i've read so little relative to what i should (especially really great books) so I'm trying to make up for all that now. I think I'm gonna do Brave New World for my next fiction, unless I muster up the courage for Ulysses again.

Gravitys rainbow and Ulysses ate the only 2 books I gave up on as apparently I lack the cognitive power to understand what the hell is going on.

The books came out before the game, in fact the official English translation of The Last Wish came out at the same time as The Witcher in 2007.

I'm not far enough into the book to comment on the political intrigue, however there's quite a bit of it in the games so it's safe to assume it will show up in the books.

People can hate on Joyce all they want, but Pynchon is actually fantastic. Worth enduring, I wouldn't say that for Ulysses.
