I can understand that, the ending was the weakest part of the book.

Annie Proulx - The shipping news?

I hear Orhan Pamuk's Snow is excellent, that's my next read after I finish The idiot...

What're you in the mood for anyway...?

This was lent to me by an English lit student friend.
Haven't checked when it was written, and I haven't finished it yet to provide a decent overview but it's essentially the diary (in letter form) of a 15 year old around 1991/92. I don't think he's supposed to be severely Aspergic (a la 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time'), but clearly suffers from some kind of post-traumatic stress disorder or another kind of autism.

Anyhoo it's a great read, just out of my favourite era for American literature (the 80's), and it's short and easygoing so definitely worth looking up. It's interesting because true to the era the kid is quite into his mixtapes, and the tracklistings and song-memories he relates play a part in the story. It's all well known music (Smashing Pumpkins, the Smiths etc) but that just compels you to listen as you read.

Cheers. I've read shipping news. Haven't heard of Orhan Pamuk's snow but I'll look into it.
I'm not really sure...that's why I asked for a recommendation.
