That'd be like using cheese to draw on a chalkboard, I think a lot of actors can play the tough guy in Raging Bull for example (although Deniro did it really well) but the trick is being able to portray those weird characters that have more emotional levels than: Rage.

I hope Depp plays the riddler in the next Batman.

deniro's portrayal of la motta entailed far more than playing the tough guy really well. it's far and away a better acting performance than anything depp has ever done.

i don't know what this means, point is depp couldn't carry a heavy, dramatic, three-dimensional character written with as much nuance as say, hamlet, and carry it well. he is a character actor mostly.

Incomparable, they're chalk and cheese. Imagine Depp playing La Motta and imagine Deniro playing Edward Scissorhands. Deniro does what he does very well, be Depp is far more diverse.
