The Idiot Discussion

Once you finish reading jump in, post your thoughts, whatever.

I think I'm reading into it too much, how much symbolism does Dostoyevsky actually use?

sleepy jack 01-13-2009 01:47 PM

Um, not much aside from images of greed, corruption, decay...and they're fairly obvious.

I just wrote a lengthy reply to this only to click off the ****ing window. Ugh.

Is there anything you want to raise first Ethan to get the ball rolling? There's so much to talk about... I mean it was never going to be sunshine/lollipops was it? What with the Myshkin/Christ analogy and all.
It's been a while since the last read but it's one of my favourite books and it's so dense thematically, one of reasons a film adaptation ought to have been impossible (save that for later).

What stuck with me was that Dostoevsky made me question what love actually is, for one thing. To anybody reading I ask you this, do you think Myshkin 'loved' Natasya or Aglaya or neither?

sleepy jack 01-14-2009 12:56 PM

I'm only 2/3 of the way through so you can raise things first :)
