Ingmar Bergman
 

Probably my favourite director. His films dealt with existentialism; the human condition, and often depicted despair and bleak despondancy. Dealing in death, illness, madness, isolation and tragedy, he often brought an element of humour to his work. His cinematography i think has never been surpassed.

The Seventh Seal is one of the greatest films ever made, an absolute masterpiece, yet he also made so many films that are close to the standard of his breakthrough. Wild Strawberries, Through a Glass Darkly, Smiles of a Summers Night, Brink Of Life, Cries and Whispers, Scenes From a Marriage, The Virgin Spring, Hour of the Wolf... the list is endless

I have'nt delved into his back catalogue too much but Seventh Seal is superb and Wild Strawberries is too. A director who is not for everyones tastes due to the introspective nature but one of Europes finest ever directors. Good call.

I saw that Seventh Seal once, it was good, I'll watch it again eventually. I hear people talk real nice things about him time and time again.

Yeah The Seventh Seal is a film you should watch more than once. Its very heavy in terms of script and meaning, you'll find watching it more than once you'll notice a line or a piece of dialogue thats you didnt pick up on before, and it'll blow your mind.

Watch Through A Glass Darkly

The only movie I've seen by him is Persona and I have to admit I really disliked it. I do want to give him another try though since he's so well regarded. I've been meaning to rent The Seventh Seal for a while.

Wild Strawberries is a classic, strikes you just as deep as the Seventh Seal

And I saw the Virgin Spring on late-night TV years ago, remember that being very good. Beautiful setting, Dark Ages Sweden!

I'd suggest Through A Glass Darkly and Smiles of a Summers Night also

Wes Craven's infamous exploitation film Last House On The Left is based upon Bergmans Virgin Spring. Shame Last House is pretty much trash.
