I get the humor because I loved his movie he had Whatever it takes

I also love Curb!

It's just Seinfeld that I never saw the funny side/point of it.

Totally agree... but it's on AMC not A&E. They really know what's good for TV shows these days.

I don't understand how you can love Curb but not like Seinfeld. I mean, George Costanza and the Larry David character are extremely similar. Curb may have a slightly different style, with the improv and I guess just more contemporary feel. But Seinfeld has the same humor, and sometimes they even deal with the same situations.

Hehe well it was more of a fan-boy answer to be honest. Seinfeld, however, is my favourite show. The writing was peculiar for what became a mainstream, hit, US sitcom. In its early days the writing really was focused on dialogue and the majority of the humour was found in conversation and the relationships between the characters. It was really ALL about the quality of the scripts.

As it got more popular, was given a bigger budget, and was arguably aimed toward a larger, more commercial market rather than a niche one then they started to include much more physical humour and take steps away from reality. It might have started as a show about nothing but didn't end that way.

The fact that, in my opinion, it remained consistent as it changed, and even after Larry David quit. The fact that the "star" of the show wasn't making any attempt to over-act (as he wasn't and isn't an actor) and supported himself with a solid cast who he shared a spotlight with rather than stroke his own ego. The fact that they were prepared to juggle with some pretty risky topics for a prime-time NBC "family" show and find themselves in a position where they were so popular that they were given the opportunity to run with them rather than have these episodes censored, and the fact that the list of secondary, supporting and guest characters was incredibly strong as well all helped them to set the bar well above the likes of Cheers and other popular sitcoms in the late 80's and early 90's.

If Seinfeld revolved mainly around George then I would like it more maybe then.

I also just like the premise of Curb. How something small he does at the beginning of each episode comes around to bite him in the ass near the end. The whole karma concept is what I love. Seinfeld isn't about karma as far as I know.

Mojo 03-18-2011 09:26 AM

Actually Seinfeld had a knack of having a seperate plot and story for each character that somehow would end up crossing over into one another by the end of an episode. And George Costanza was all about karma. There is an episode of Curb where Larry feels like when he does bad things, good things to happen to him and vice-versa, before it ultimately kicks him in the face. This is basically just taking what he did with George first, who was the character he wrote very close to himself in real life.

djchameleon 03-18-2011 09:30 AM

Maybe I will give Seinfeld another try but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to like it....and I'm watching it again with the knowledge that I already don't like it/get some of the jokes.

Howard the Duck 03-18-2011 09:51 AM

I just love Seinfeld - the comedy flows very naturally and doesn't seem to be orchestrated at all, whereas with something like Friends, there tend to be over-acting and exaggeration

Because they're so caught up in the pointless minutiae of life (the nothing) that they have ceased to be rational, well adjusted individuals.

DoctorSoft 03-21-2011 11:37 PM

Right now I'm watching some Adventure Time.

I agree, this show is brilliant. I've never seen better acting on cable television. I have the 1st season on DVD, but haven't been able to find the 2nd out here yet. But believe me, when I do, I'm buying it. I can't wait to see what season 2 has in store.

This is a tidal wave of a generalization, it's about so much more than meth. It's about a man that has been backed into a corner by life, and is learning how to fight back. The acting alone is good enough to warrant a watch, even if you don't agree with the drug related backdrop.

debaserr 03-22-2011 11:41 AM

the two best shows on TV right now are Breaking Bad and Mad Men. both are way beyond anything else right now. they are already all-timers for me.

mannny 03-23-2011 09:45 AM

^Yes! AMC is the new channel for TV shows. You should check out Walking Dead, also on AMC. The first season was only six episodes but still really good. Even if your not into zombies, it's still worth a watch. Also nice avatar.

Howard the Duck 03-23-2011 09:20 PM

^^totally blase about zombies here

debaserr 03-23-2011 11:28 PM

Walking Dead didn't do much for me, but I'm picky.

The Batlord 03-25-2011 09:51 AM

Why are there no good shows on network tv anymore? It's like whenever they decide that they need a hit, instead of taking a chance on a good idea they just make another reality tv show or CSI rip off. The only good shows are on cable now.

mannny 03-25-2011 01:36 PM

I feel like the whole premium channels thing like HBO, Showtime and such really changed TV. They can get away with pretty much anything they want and can touch on some intense topics. These networks really give the producers of the show creative control, rather than letting the network's needs and ratings get involved too much.

Also, I've noticed that most of the big shows these days are focused on a character or group of character that engages in either illegal activities or general bad behavior. For example, Dexter, Weeds, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, and Mad Men all focus on characters that sell drugs, kill, gamble, or cheat yet are much more complex and we feel for them. If you ask me, I think it's a really good time for TV.

Yes I am a Van Damme fanboy but I have always got the impression that he is a flawed character having battled various addictions in his life and being diagnosed with bipolar.

He could come across as a total douche in this series (I hate reality T.V on the whole but had to watch this) but instead he seems a very genuine guy with many personal issues who is not afraid to admit to them.

He also owns a dog sanctuary in his homeland which wasn't forced down your throat as a mere publicity stunt.

Mrs Brown's Boys.

This Irish comedy has been running a while in it's native country and has recently made it's way over here and it's a decent giggle.

A man dressed as a matriarchal grandmother who constantly swears and spews classic one liners is a winner in my book. All shot on a live stage it also has a subversive edge too. Sounds crap? Well watch this:

Howard the Duck 03-26-2011 08:24 AM

watched another episode of Fort Boyard and M/s Hand definitely is very ithcy today - one of the contestants had pretty perky nipples poking out of her top

I'm in LOVE with this show. Like Skins with superpowers!

Or...not. Still, love it. Although, two episodes in and all I've wanted to do is to give Simon a hug.

Scarlett O'Hara 03-30-2011 04:09 AM

I started watching Drop Dead Diva but stopped because I've decided it's rubbish. Total American bullshit.

Pretty much my opinion about every single show on television these days.

Scarlett O'Hara 03-30-2011 04:14 AM

It's true though. I can't wait for Friday at 10pm as Come Fly With Me is on which is a show made by the guys that did Little Britain. I SO can't wait.

Key 03-30-2011 04:15 AM

Little Britain is funny as hell. I've watched a few videos on youtube. It's very well made.

Scarlett O'Hara 03-30-2011 04:16 AM

Pretty much one of my favourite TV shows. Britain has a way with making brilliant TV shows.

Key 03-30-2011 04:17 AM

They just know the difference of what is and what isn't funny. Unlike american television where they seem to think alcohol, drugs and sex are funny.

Scarlett O'Hara 03-30-2011 04:37 AM

Which it isn't. Like this for example, hilarious:

Key 03-30-2011 04:40 AM

^Yes. That's why I love the english version of the office. It's funny, but it's also funny in a smart way, i love this video because it compares both versions:

Howard the Duck 03-30-2011 05:14 AM

was actually gonna start on NCIS : Los Angeles just because it has Chris O'Donell and LL Cool J but watched one episode and it was - naaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

Best British sitcom ever, in my opinion.

As for Come Fly With Me, it was very similar to Little Britain. This time they kept they outrageous characters confined to the one location, the airport, and went back to each of these characters every week. I thought it was very good for the first two or three episodes and then felt they slipped up exactly where they did with Little Britain, which is in repetition. It is however worth a watch, I enjoyed it.

The Walking Dead is coming back in the UK next month and I CANNOT WAIT! I got so hooked on the first season thanks to my mate at Uni and I friggin' love the show!

And also Jamie's Dream School (our US users may have no clue what this is) but Jamie Oliver (a very up-his-arse chef who also does adverts for a supermarket) brings in some inspirational people to help inspire some of the UK's most egotisitical, rude and down right ignorant kids I have ever seen... the concept is fantastic, I mean having Rolf Harris teach you art?! Jazzie B from Soul II Soul teaching you about music production?! WIN!

Oh and also Professor Robert Winston teaching you science...... EPIC WIN!!

Howard the Duck 03-31-2011 10:32 AM

I wouldn't mind having Robert Fripp teach me guitar.

And yeah I know who Jamie is.

They shouldnt be compared though. Apart from having the same name and the same basis (mockumentary in a paper company) they are completely different entities. The UK Office was more like an actual documentary that had a bit of a goofy boss, every other character in the UK version was just basically an average run of the mill person. The US Office has alot more eccentric characters, Jim and Pam were the only two who resembled every day people who you might meet in an actual office situation.
