Viewers end up taking different things from the show based off of their experiences. I feel like you are quick to shut down my experiences because you don't know what I've been through with my own battles with depression and attempting.

I don't think in any of my posts I have showed any indication that I'm shutting down your experiences. You've not really said anything about them (nor have I) so I don't know where you're getting that nonsense. I understand the thought process you have, but this type of thing doesn't need to be debated. There needs to be information provided in the proper way, not some blanket of information that people can debate regarding depression and suicide. Sure, duga and I have had a discussion about this, but if it were me and I had committed suicide, the last thing I'd want people to be doing is talking about whether or not the cause of it was valid or not. For one that's just completely insensitive and a push backwards for those that are actually dealing with this type of thing. You can love the show all you want, but don't expect me to do the same. And to be honest, I would NOT want to have a glorified TV show made about me in an attempt to make a quick buck off of a serious issue.

Just in case you are curious, I've had several attempts in my life where an unstoppable force stopped me from proceeding. I'm not trying to belittle you, as I understand most of your point.

Anybody watching Fargo?

Frownland 05-05-2017 01:33 PM

I'm watching the first season, how did you know?

Trying to catch up because I dropped off on the third episode for no particularly good reason on my first time around.

The discussion isn't about invalidating one's experience. It is about creating a platform to discuss those experiences and get further education/help if need be. I still feel like the show is a good jumping off point for parents to bring up tough conversations with their kids if they are willing to talk about it. It is fine you don't like the show but the show as a tool is a useful one to dig deeper and create a conversation especially with teens that can relate.

I stumbled across the sketch comedy series Bruiser which is a fucking who's who in British comedy from the early 00's. You've got David Mitchell, Robert Webb, Martin Freeman, and Olivia Colman, with writing credits including Richard Ayoade and Ricky Gervais.

Watched the last of it last night.

With that, I will say I just have no overall need to continue watching the show. I wouldn't even say my perspective is accurate or one that should be taken seriously. But again, I also have a tendency to second guess myself.

This is me too. It's kind of more based though with me on a space consideration, ie I only have so much space on my set-top box, so as the percentage begins to drop I start to look at series I've recorded, think "I'll try this" and if by episode two or three I'm not getting it I'll normally delete it just to make space. I do need to be impressed fairly quickly. I need to WANT to watch the show, not hope it gets better as each week it fails.

Anyone here watching American Gods ?
2 episodes out at the moment and so far, I love it. I'm also glad that as it turns out, I forgot most of the plot of the book (which I read over a decade ago, I think), so I'm getting surprised and can't bitch about how they did/didn't do something right.

As for the plot, well.. I don't want to spoil anything, as the main character is someone trying to figure out what the hell is going on and where it's all going, but it's a Neil Gaiman story, so that should tell you everything you need to know - it's a mix of real and supernatural, with dreams, popculture references and bizarre characters. It's a dark and mature story, with quite a bit of humor in it.

Ian McShane is brilliant as he always is, Gillian Anderson is a goddess (literally) and after seeing both episodes yesterday, at this moment, I can't really find any flaws in this. The casting in general, so far, seems brilliant. Peter Stormare as Czernobog and Orlando Jones as Anansi also work great. In fact I used to loathe mr Orlando Jones, without any legit reason (other than his sutpid face ;p) and now.. after only one scene he's been in so far in the series, he's growing on me.

Oh, and a fair warning: there is violence and there is nudity. "heads blowing up in slo mo after being struck with a weapon" level violence, and "oh, here's another erect penis" level nudity. So feel warned if that's something you don't necessarily approve of.

I've been watching it and I mostly agree. I also just finished rereading the book and it follows the plot of it pretty spot on, with a few differences. The scene at Laura's grave between Shadow and Audrey never happened in the book, and Shadow never bothered to pack up the house. I suspect those scenes were added to make Shadow seem less nonplussed by his wife being dead. The opening historical scenes have also been changed, with Anasi's being completely different but still amazing. Overall I'm quite pleased with the series for having the guts to go as far out weird as it has so far. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they do some of the scenes that play out much later in the book.

As for criticisms, so far my only one is that the sound mixing appears to be a little borked, with the ambient sound/music as loud as the talking volume, but that could just be my TV.
