Questions about RockBand/GuitarHero type games

I hope some of you video game fans can help me here. My wife really would like one of those RockBand/GuitarHero type games for Christmas. She's not interested in the guitar or drum component, only the microphone, and wants something that has 80s pop songs by people along the lines of Madonna, Joan Jett, Cyndi Lauper, etc. We have a Wii. Any thoughts one which game would be good for her? Also, I understand you can download additional songs for some these games, how does that work and which games can you do it with?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

As far as I know, the only game that would interest her would be Singstar 80's, but that is unfortunately only for Playstation consoles.

Singstar sounds perfect for her tastes, but Alfred is right they're all PS2 exclusives.

If she has friends who like to play games with her then I recommend Rock Band since it has mic, guitar, bass and drum peripherals and a cooperative mode for 4 players. Though I'd look up the game's song list to see what kind of music it has, like guitar hero it probably has a bit of everything.

It has a heavy price tag, and I've never played it, but everyone seems to think it works really well and that all the control styles are solid.

And you should probably avoid this one.

While it fits your description, I hear it's really bad.

you could probably buy singstar AND a ps2 for the cost of a full band setup with either RB or GH.

if all she wants to do is sing then i'd suggest buying a 3rd party microphone and whatever game disc has the most songs she wants. the only bundles available are either full band or with a guitar.

as far as downloads go it's just a matter of using your wii points and downloading the songs to your memory card (not sure if any rhythm titles besides GH or RB support downloads). also, there's no way you could just find the files anywhere else and pre-load a flash card... no way at all

There's also the game Lips which is like Singstar (karaoke game) for the XBOX 360. Possibly, there are various versions of the game. I never tried it, but I guess it's okay. I expect the gameplay is roughly like the Singstar games, so the real difference between them I assume is the track list.

And it looks so cool and trendy too.

edit :

Sorry for mentioning a 360 game though .. Just .. thought I'd throw it out there. I see it's not ported for Wii.

I mean sure the Wii has a lot of games like this but...

Probably not anything of better quality than something designed by 2 guys in a wooden shed out in the wilderness somewhere, which unfortunately makes up half of the Wii library at the moment. :(

With a game like Rock Band you don't have to play all the instruments do you? Is it possible to just use the mic and forget about the drums and guitar if you aren't interested in them?

The only singing-type games I can think of for Wii are:

(I'm not entirely sure if there is singing in this one? But there very will might be).

yep, absolutely. you'd have to buy the mic separately unless you want to have the full band experience 'just in case' hehe. i'm telling you it's fun as hell haha

Wii Music has no singing, it just uses the wiimote.
