Off-Topic but almost relevant: I didn't see the Golden Compass movie. Thoughts on it?
I hope you read the book, it's up there with HP and LOTR as my favorite fantasy series. Apparently they butchered the book in the film so as not to offend anyone and given the subpar commercial reception the film got, regardless of being a watered down version of the book (so they say), there's no plan to make the other two films, which go way way beyond the first in attacking the Church and everything it stands for. Goddamn shame though, it could have been awesome.

Yeah, maybe that's why I wasn't moved by it, because I'd already read the book and knew what was going to happen...

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it and thought it was a pretty good movie (I also loved Zooey Deschanel as the teacher!) but I think the book moved me more and I also think they're are a lot other better children's fantasies out there.

Hook, for example. I love that movie.

Done.

And while I'm here, my two cents: the Harry Potter movies are entertaining but the Lord of the Rings movies are far superior in every way I can think of.

Terabithia > Hook IMO.

But I really liked Hook too, I don't understand why so many people hate it.

I loved Hook, it was to Peter Pan as what Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead was to Hamlet, an alternative take on a fimilar story.

I voted Lord of the Rings, the movie had everything as far as adventure and battle scenes, the GGI was amazing, and the scenery of New Zealand was spectacular, I loved everything about that movie except Gollum, that character was so annoying, his voice and everything about him grated my nerves. Besides that, I think it was a great cast, I love Cate Blanchett and Liv Taylor.

JRR Tolkien was the father of modern fantasy and everything from Star Wars to Star Trek pays homage to LOTR in some way. I'm kind of fascinated that he was freinds with C.S. Lewis, who also wrote his own fantasy adventure The Chronicles of Narnia, too bad that was not included in the poll.

Neapolitan,

What do you mean by "GGI"? I am familiar with "CGI", or Computer Generated Imagery, which I know was used to great effect in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, for example with the character Gollum or the scenes of Mordor. However, upon looking up "GGI", I found the following...
- General Graphics Interface
- General Glass Industries
- Gravity Guidance, Inc.
- Galileo Galilei Institute for Theoretical Physics
I don't see how General Glass Industries, Gravity Guidance, Inc., the Galileo Galilei Institude for Theoretical Physics, and to a lesser extent, the General Graphics Interface, relate to the movies of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I found that part of your post confusing as such. Care to explain?

Another reason you're basically my new favourite. ;P

Wow, this thread has made me realize that I have only seen the HP movies and read one of the books, and on the contrary, read all the LOTR books and seen none of the movies. (Unless the animated version of 'The Hobbit' from the 70s counts.)

Either way I loved the LOTR books when I was in Grade school, but I can never pass up the opportunity to smoke a fatty and watch HP, im not too sure what its about, but its extremely entertaining.

The only thing I didn't like about Hook was Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell, and she wasn't bad so much as she was miscast. Tinkerbell is one of those classic silent characters like Charlie Chaplin's Tramp, Harpo Marx, Wyile Coyote, Tom and Jerry and Link from Legend of Zelda. She shouldn't talk.

Oh c'mon, Gollum is awesome. The CGI and facial expression work was amazing, but he probably had the best performance oddly enough. It's a great character.

Tolkien and Lewis's interpretation of fantasical creatures and elements has become the standard of fantasy today. When you see movies or books with Elves or Dwarves or Orcs in it, it's almost always inspired by Tolkein or Lewis's take on these races.

WoW for example, there's hardly anything in it that isn't ripped straight out of middle earth or narnia, is that a bad thing? No, they're wonderful worlds, there's nothing wrong with books, movies and games wanting to constantly revisit and present middle earth or narnia like imagery in new ways.

Though I would like to see more fantasy with more original settings and creatures.

How can you hate Gollum? The character of him in the film is such an amazingly accurate adaptation of him from the book. The way he speaks in the film is exactly how I would have imaged him to speak. And I think the point of his character is that he is supposed to grate your nerves... he's slimy and sneaky and also sad. Plus how could you not like the backstory to his life? I think he is a great character.
