While the LOTR are much better cinematographic examples, the Harry Potters appeal to both sexes and are far more amusing than dying orks.
I disagree... I love LOTR and I'm a female. There are so many strong female characters in the series. Arwen, Galadriel, Eowyn... how epic is that scene in the films where Eowyn verses the Nazgul/ Witch King?
"No man can kill me."
"I am no man."

Even regardless of that I really don't see how it's a 'guy' series. I know heaps of girls/women who love the books and the films.

I totally agree with all of this. I'd say by and large the only women I know who don't like the LOTR movies are people who don't like fantasy movies in general.

Personally I dont mind them, but the only one I voluntarily watch is the Fellowship. This may just be me and my taste in movies, as fantasy/action/drama doesnt really appeal to me. I like the Harry Potters more, but I'm not going to deny that the LOTR movies are much better.

I know lots of women who like them aswell, so I agree with what your saying. I just also know plenty of girls who cant stand them. It may just be a New Zealand thing as its so over-hyped here.

I like fantasy as much as the next person, but LOTR doesnt really do it for me.

How is this even an argument? The LOTR films are superior but NEITHER are great. The HP books are cliche with ordinary writing and the LOTR books are epic in concept but meandering and rambling in it's prose.

LOTR wins by leagues both with the books and the films. I enjoyed the HP novels as a kid, but growing up you realize that Rowling has an extremely flat and unimaginative language. Tolkien's prose on the other hand is very rich in its descriptions and the overall complexity of the world suggests an enormous amount of dedication. Tolkien's vast knowledge of celtic and nordic myths is also evident throughout, and adds a very special flavour to the books.

The movie adoption of LOTR is certainly not without its flaws (especially the third one), but I think they were very well done, and Jackson did a great job on what must've been a very difficult task.
