The most consistent director

Who do you think is the most consistent director ever? As well as today. I was having this discussion and I think every direction has had at least one bad film. But other great directors have had a few bad ones in their catalogue. But who overall is the most consistent?

I know it's a bit difficult to do, if you consider someone like Spielberg who has been making films since the 60s and then you have an up and coming director like Christopher Nolan..

But I'd be curious to hear everyone's opinions anyway.

My vote would go to Quentin Tarantino. He has got only one bad film and even his worst film.. I still enjoyed watching it, mind you I'd never watch Death Proof again.

James 05-17-2010 01:20 PM

I really liked Death Proof

Anyhow I'd like to raise Danny Boyle
Only one not fantastic film and it was still pretty decent and i'm not a sci-fi guy so yes Danny Boyle.

The Beach was fucking dreadful, and I didn't rate Millions but apart from them two, I'd agree. Danny Boyle is a brilliant British director.

James 05-17-2010 01:24 PM

The Beach was great, Millions was alright but Shallow Grave, Slumdog, Trainspotting all top 20.

ziren 05-17-2010 01:27 PM

my vote goes for Stanley Kubrick.
everything I've seen by him was amazing.

Violent & Funky 05-17-2010 01:30 PM

Tarantino's my favorite but he takes forever to release a new film...

James 05-17-2010 01:32 PM

^Aye we'll have to wait till like 2013 for the next.

Chainsawkitten 05-17-2010 01:41 PM

That's nothing compared to Norshteyn.

I'll have to say Tarkovsky, being my favorite director of all. All of his films are great (granted, I have not yet seen all of his student films).

2003
2004
2007
2009

in the 00s he churned them out quite recent, it took him 6 years to follow up Jackie Brown.

I think Tarantino is the most consistent but there's still time yet for his films to go really shit. I just hope they don't. He's making a film before Kill Bill vol 3. Kill Bill is set for 2013.. so we'll have one before that. :D

Chainsawkitten 05-17-2010 01:55 PM

To be honest I can't see the fuzz over Querentino. I've never managed to watch any of his movies all the way through. The seem so utterly pointless.

Violent & Funky 05-17-2010 03:28 PM

I simply like him because Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Inglourious Basterds are three of my favorite movies. He has awesome style and always puts everything he has into his films. I was a little disappointed by Kill Bill and haven't watched the second part yet. It was okay. I'm gonna get around to watching Jackie Brown soon enough and haven't decided whether Death Proof is worth my time yet or not...

loveissucide 05-17-2010 03:30 PM

Most consistent?
Mike Leigh, outstanding body of work.

Kill Bill was disappointing?? WHAT? You haven't even seen vol 2, everyone thinks vol 1 was > vol 2.

I prefer volume 2.

But how can it disappoint you? such raw violence. I love Kill Bill. :(

I LOVED the violence. All Tarantino movies have that. But what else was there?

James 05-17-2010 03:44 PM

Some great characterisation with The Bride.

An interesting story line between a woman assassin and her former employee.. The second has violence and reveals more about the plot. You need to watch 1 and 2 side by side. Or quite close to each other, that's what I did. Truly terrific piece of work. Death Proof is worth your time, just cos it's Tarantino. But it isn't his strongest film, the first half is really good.

James 05-17-2010 03:47 PM

Wut, the second parts better Zoe is one of my favourite Tarantino characters.

bungalow 05-17-2010 03:50 PM

every film tarkovsky made was a masterpiece. same with bresson. so one of those.

NumberNineDream 05-17-2010 03:55 PM

Most consistent: Federico Fellini
Each and every one of his films is a masterpiece that can easily stand out on its own. From the Neo-Realist La Strada, to the Surreal/Psychological/Autobiographical 8 1/2, the ambiguous Absurd Comedy/Drama E la nave va or the peplum Satyricon.. and the list goes on.

Another consistent director: Martin Scorsese.
Even his short films as a student in NYC, or his abundant documentaries... all of them make for a great memorable watch.

bungalow 05-17-2010 04:05 PM

ill add the name of carl th dreyer as well. his final run of films, even though they were unfortunately very few and far between, are some of the greatest, most powerful films of all time--la passion de jeanne d'arc, vampyre, day of wrath, ordet, gertrud.

I think the general consensus is Kill Bill vol 1 >>>> Kill Bill vol 2. I hold them both in the same regard.

James 05-17-2010 04:08 PM

Ah was talking about Death Proof you fool!

Ooh, Death Proof definitely had its plus points, the idea of having two identical stories was definitely original but it didn't really do it for me. The second half of the story it was like yeah, I get it.. I know what's gonna happen. The ending was pretty predictable too.

James 05-17-2010 04:18 PM

The cheesy ending was one of the points but Zoe was awesome.

Was Zoe the black one? She wasn't very memorable..

pourmeanother 05-17-2010 04:21 PM

Consistent is a funny word. In a way, Michael Bay could be one of the most consistent directors of all time, in that every film he touches ridiculous CG and over-the-top explosions are a guarantee...

James 05-17-2010 04:21 PM

Zoe was the kiwi.

Consistent as in consistently good directors. Not Consistently annoying. :D

And oooh, yeah. She was okay... I guess..

James 05-17-2010 04:28 PM

She was awesome!

Haha :)

Well in that case... I'll have to think about this one a little...

khfreek 05-17-2010 08:46 PM

Uwe Boll is very consistent
