Feb14-16 NERDS UNITE!

Anyone else super excited about the Jeopardy tournament with ibm's Watson, Jennings and Rutter?
-03.ibm.com/innovation/us/watson/index.shtml
jeopardy.com/minisites/watson/

How do you think it'll go? What disadvantages do you think Watson will have?

infantrysgirl18 02-03-2011 03:27 PM

I saw that about a week ago....pretty amazing stuff.

alli-oop 02-03-2011 03:47 PM

I think that was the trial show. I saw the link on yahoo but didn't watch it. Watson won i read, but now they can tweek their games.
The real one is a three day event.

infantrysgirl18 02-03-2011 04:01 PM

ahhh ok... yeah i watched the whole vid on youtube and it was really cool. watson dominated for a while. i watched another video talking about watson itself and all the programming they had to do to get all of the knowledge in watson. its just algorithm after algorithm after algorithm. fascinating stuff.

bob. 02-03-2011 08:46 PM

i cannot wait.....i watch Jeopardy nightly

so yeah they've been putting 'WATSON' up against pretty much any Jeopardy champ who was willing to test it....at first it took a while for the computer to understand things like voice inflection but apparently it is ready to go up against the best....they did a trial run with WATSON, Jennings and Rutter and the computer killed them.....but in an interview Jennings said he feels he may have figured the computer out!!!

so yeah looking forward to this :)

Burning Down 02-03-2011 08:48 PM

Should be cool to watch. I love Jeopardy.

Altough I think you're allright, I should warn you that avoiding the 'no links' rule can cause a ban. Just sayin' ;).

It's not an advertisement though. If a new member is blatantly advertising something, or spams to 15 posts so they can share a real link, that will result in an automatic ban.

s_k 02-04-2011 08:05 AM

Allright, that wasn't mentioned in the topic :).

Burning Down 02-04-2011 08:35 AM

It's just a discussion topic for a TV show, which is alright.

alli-oop 02-04-2011 10:54 AM

Thanks for not banning me. Didn't realize that. But yeah i'm a harmless jeopardy nerd.
I posted a couple other youtube music links in a couple other replies...one was the forgein music one.

alli-oop 02-04-2011 10:54 AM

Dammit, i cant spell forgein.

infantrysgirl18 02-04-2011 12:18 PM

well if your a huge jeopardy nerd have you seen the SNL bits about jeopardy?? i find them hilarious...

alli-oop 02-04-2011 05:17 PM

yeah love those. When while farell hosted last year they did that skit again. definitely made the audience happy.

infantrysgirl18 02-04-2011 05:19 PM

ahaha they make me lol so much. i never get tired of watching them. my favs were when they impersonated sean connery :D hiliarious

alli-oop 02-14-2011 06:51 PM

watched tonight's. fun tournament. not a run away as you might think either...very fair between the 3 of them. I'm looking forward to the next 2 days.

infantrysgirl18 02-15-2011 12:20 AM

Just watched on youtube. Pretty close race. Watson would be perfect though if he could hear. But otherwise pretty awesome.

djchameleon 02-15-2011 12:37 AM

Watson needs a hearing aide

ThePhanastasio 02-15-2011 03:18 AM

Watson's voice being super creepy was my only issue with him.

what type of voice should he have instead?

ThePhanastasio 02-15-2011 04:17 AM

Oh, I don't know. I just find computer voices creepy.

Burning Down 02-15-2011 10:27 PM

Yeah his voice is kind of creepy. And if Watson wins, where does the million dollars go? To charity?

Yes it all goes to Charity. If either one of the other guys win, they keep half and the other half goes to charity but I can't find out which charity that is though.

ThePhanastasio 02-16-2011 09:06 AM

It looks like Watson's really hit his stride.

I'd want him to have the moviefone guy's voice or the one that does all the trailers.

ThePhanastasio 02-16-2011 11:33 AM

I'd like him to talk like Morgan Freeman.

Or, better yet, Gregory Peck.

Watson would be especially charming.

djchameleon 02-16-2011 11:34 AM

you know what he has a british sounding name....why not give him someone with a british accent? that'd be awesome.

You mean Don LaFontaine? What a great voice that guy had. Unfortunately he died a couple of years ago :(

there is a new guy that took over his place though.

infantrysgirl18 02-16-2011 11:45 AM

I loved the fact when Watson got the daily double he decided to wager an odd amount of money....$6035 i believe. Oh Artificial Intelligence..

Whereas a human would have just said $6000! I thought it was pretty funny. Then at the end it ended up with some weird amount of money. I'm sure if Watson could wager cents, it would LOL!

infantrysgirl18 02-16-2011 09:47 PM

That was brilliant. I really enjoyed watching Watson initiate the takeover of the computer overlords... I just still dont get where the weird wagers come from.... But Watson is truly amazing. The sheer power that goes behind him is just awe inspiring. Im pretty impressed.

ThePhanastasio 02-16-2011 09:48 PM

I actually decided I really like Watson.

And remembered my deep love for Ken Jennings. I didn't care for Jennings much his first 14 or so episodes, but he grew on me.

Watson obvs. still has some glitches to work out, but it's definitely a very impressive bit of technology.

alli-oop 02-17-2011 11:03 AM

It was a fun tournament. After day 1 I actually thought Brad might win.
I loved Ken's comment in brackets at final jeopardy.
He's geektastic.

I guess it was maybe random numbers. between their score and his score (look at that, me saying "his" score).
There's a fair amount of reasoning in wagering...what's their score...if I bet this much and win I will have more...If I wager this and lose I will have less....and so on.
I guess the programmers can only "train" Watson so far. Set up those parameters and then a random number comes from that.
Although Watson can't set those parameters based on his confidence level, like humans can..."I know a lot on this subject, therefore I will wager higher". So it's kind of a shot in the dark.
Interesting to think about.

I don't think his wagers was based on random numbers. He was programmed. Nothing about him is random even though to us it may seem random. The numbers that he used for the wagers was based off of the percentage of how correct the answer might be. If you paid attention to the little bar they were showing at the bottom, you would see that.
