He's one of those people who I have generally considered to be amusing, but he's played the same character too many times, and it's all got a bit old at this stage.

That exact angle has worked for Gilbert Gottfried for over 30 years now though. Why can't Sandler enjoy the exact same attention for the exact same schtick from a new generation?

(yes, I'm calling him a hack)

Goofle 03-07-2012 08:06 AM

Compared to the average comedy actor, he is of course funny. But I am not a huge fan.

14232949 03-07-2012 08:33 AM

Not funny. Very bland in anything he does, and every character he portrays falls into either one of two categories;
-down on his luck average guy who gets given an unexpected break
-impossibly unfunny stereotype or retarded man.

The man has no range, has no redeeming qualities as a leading actor and just is not funny, nor can he portray serious roles either. He sucks.

James 03-07-2012 08:47 AM

He can clearly be a legit actor because he was great in Funny People, but half the time he just plays the angry manchild. It gets old fast.

Guybrush 03-07-2012 10:23 AM

He was an unfunny asshole in Funny People and that kinda suited him. I consider it his best role. :p:

Sparky 03-07-2012 11:54 AM

I thought his performances in both punch drunk love and spanglish were good.

He's a pretty easy target to pick on, but if you go back and watch the SNL skits his comedic range is larger than the run of the mill films he has released.

Adam is just doing what every other comedian does when he has becomes successful, make ****e.

I do detest his films though-lets be clear. Especially the one's he doesn't appear in, ie Grandmas Boy, anything with rob schneider.

James 03-07-2012 12:30 PM

I hated Spanglish, such a dull film.

Sparky 03-07-2012 08:05 PM

sweet avatar dude

James 03-08-2012 12:18 AM

Thanks, Mopatop is the sh*t.

Violent & Funky 03-08-2012 05:36 AM

Punch-Drunk Love and Reign Over Me have displayed that he can handle a serious role. Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are those kind of generational movies, they were fresh and funny at the time.

I'll give you a comedic actor who's easy to hate but has chosen consistently quality films: Seth Rogen...

Scarlett O'Hara 03-12-2012 06:44 AM

I think his 'comedy' is rubbish. He's won countless Razzie awards.

Bloozcrooz 03-12-2012 07:26 AM

I liked his early movies. After that there hasnt really been anything that has been remotley funny to me.

Howard the Duck 03-12-2012 04:46 PM

^^he pretty much jumped the shark with Click

still pretty ok up till that point

ohsen12 03-31-2012 09:37 PM

I find Jonah Hill more funny than Adam Sandler. I would categorize Adam Sandler with Jim Carey. They were okay in their day, and focused primarily on "stupid" comedy acts, but have recently released nothing out of the ordinary.

Croatian Masochist 04-02-2012 05:05 AM

Adam Sandler is hilarious if you're 12 years old. this coming from the super mature 15 year old.

One role that I didn't mind was You Don't Mess With The Zohan, because it had almost ten legitimately funny lines that made me laugh; and that is enough to make me not mind a movie.

I agree with the categorisation with Jim Carey

Howard the Duck 04-02-2012 05:17 AM

to be fair, Jim Carrey had a fairly good role in The Truman Show

similarly, Sandler was said to have been good in Punch Drunk Love, but i haven't seen that yet

Key 04-09-2012 07:22 PM

^ I love The Truman Show. It was different for Carrey, but he played the role really well. He played another serious role but I can't remember the name of the movie. i think it was a horror.

Guybrush 04-09-2012 11:55 PM

I've seen Punch Drunk Love and didn't like it.

You're thinking of The number 23.

I think The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the film to see that shows Carrey is a more than capable actor.

Pretty much sums it up. He was great, and now has just floundered.

Anyone hear his CDs? My mom bought a copy of What the Hell Happened to Me? when I was 12 or so and I remember laughing my ass off. The Cult was my favorite.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of.

The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is incredible. Everyone should see it at least once.

Frownland 04-17-2012 11:24 AM

Jim Carrey has had a lot of fantastic roles, he just Nic Cage-ed out for several films.

True that. His first two albums were hilarious.

Funny people is probably the most unfunny DVD I've ever wasted 3 quid on. I'll never get that or the time I spent viewing it back.

PoorOldPo 04-17-2012 05:34 PM

He is supposed to be a lovely guy.

never said anything about his "acting"

Sparky 04-18-2012 02:15 AM

I know cuz
That was an original thought on my part.

I was just stating the obvious

Astronomer 04-18-2012 02:35 AM

I found him funny when I was about 10.

But I have to say now, I find him kinda lame.

I still love the Wedding Singer, though... shh.

Quoted for truth, in a nutshell. Wedding Singer stands the test of time, doesn't it. Other than that, junior high humor.

Not sure if its supposed to be hilarious to be honest. It's easily his best acting role.

Thom Yorke 04-18-2012 02:13 PM

I loved Funny People. Another Apatow hit as far as I'm concerned, even if it was more of a dramedy.

Still hate Sandler, but he was good for his role in it.

Key 04-18-2012 03:27 PM

I find Billy Madison to be one of his most quotable movies, honestly. And for some reason, I feel like i've said that already. Hmm.

Anyway, can't go wrong with:

"Yeah I peed my pants, it's cool to pee your pants!"

Point Break was pretty solid. I was convinced he was an FBI agent.

James 04-18-2012 04:11 PM

It's just like most comedy actors, he started off good then got crap. Similiar things have happened to Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy......But they were better in the first place...

I came to enjoy Steve Martin a lot after Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. That movie is incredible no matter how many times you watch it.

I love The Jerk. I must have watched that movie hundreds of times with my dad.
