Movie Heroes/Heroines

Yes I know movies are (as a rule) fictitious but we have surely admired certain characters in films and wanted to be them?

Whether it is the actual performance, the way they deliver lines, their screen presence, their written dialogue, the way they move or even dress.

I am not talking about the actual actor or actress behind the role either and don't just post a pic and leave it at that as that is just damn lazy. Give us your reasons even if you may find them embarrassing!

Film, character and actor and maybe a vid will help.

Rob Corddry. Hot Tub Time Machine.

Rarely have I seen an actor capture the pathos of approaching middle age so well. Instead of 'pretending' to be a old sod trying to recapture past youth, he still is a youth in his eyes yet he ultimately is resigned to his fate of past failures but he still approaches his life with a zest and an optimism that many 20 years his junior would be jealous of. Top this with off with a sense of humour that is seemingly all incandescent rage hiding an acute vulnerability and you have the perfect everyday 40 something.

More to come (no pun intended if you have seen the film).

I am Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, in essence. Nobody calls me Mr. Lebowski, I'm the Dude... man... so that's what you call me. That, or Duder, or His Dudeness or El Duderino if, you know, you're not into the whole brevity thing.

-Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski

Also Peter Gibbons from Office Space. You know what I'd do if I had a million dollars. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

-Ron Livingston

Howard the Duck 01-15-2012 12:05 AM

i don't wanna be him, but i am him atm, full of unfocussed uncontrollable rage:-

When I was in high school, I admired John Bender from The Breakfast Club. Perhaps a little too much...

Yeah, those slacker type characters resonate with me too.

Mrd00d 01-15-2012 05:05 PM

I don't like to think of them as slacker type characters, but I suppose that's the most common way to look at it.

I feel these characters have found the everyday 9 to 5 lifestyle undesirable. Ron Livingston's character, for example, even found work he could enjoy. But the bottom line I suppose is that they don't care for the mundane day-in day-out same ol' same ol'. Some see them as slackers, but it just shows me there isn't just one way to live a happy life.

GravitySlips 01-15-2012 06:28 PM

That's essentially what I mean, yeah (re: the 9 to 5).

I don't use the term slacker here in a pejorative way at all (I don't mean lazy people). I just appreciate what these characters value in their lives. No interest whatsoever in the corporate 'rat race' - they just desire a relatively simple way to live which affords them time to pursue their real passions. It's that that resonates with me.

Okay so we are on the same page after all, very cool...

i admired min.zhao from "The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber"

Howard the Duck 01-16-2012 01:42 AM

but not "cheong mo kei"

dunno what's that in mandarin - "zhang wu ji"?

in case anyone doesn't know what we're talking about, it's a movie/tv adaptation of a wu xia (fantasy kung-fu) epic by Louis Wu:-

Original Dick Winters, 1944.

I don't think I have to write anything more if you saw Band of Brothers. But if not, let me just tell you this guy is my personal hero. The courage, the smarts, the charisma - a perfect, some say too perfect, officer. And a great man who after coming back from WW2 never shot a firearm again.
