Old Hollywood Versus New Hollywood
 

In terms of quality, cinematography, special effects, acting ability, blockbusters and notoriety, which era do you think is better and why?

When you say old, are we saying from the 1920s and 1930s to 1970s, or different dates?

I always thought the schism between "Old Hollywood" and "New Hollywood" was in 1968 when Easy Rider came out. Not sure if it's the official date, or just the most agreed upon.

To answer the question though I feel more connected with the New Hollywood because that's what I'm largely familiar with, but there were certainly a number of important movies to come out during the Old Hollywood regime like King Kong, Freaks, and Citizen Kane. New Hollywood kind of has a bit of an easier time though because of the loosened censorship codes compared to the Hayes code, but the 1970's are proof of just how much good can come when you shun a rigid structure and actually allow artists to express themselves without having to wear a choke chain.

i really have no preference

either one has really good movies and really bad movies

i do, however, wish to point out that the 70s directorial freedom and artistic unfetterment was the best period of Hollywood - it was like anything could get made without pandering to the masses

after "Star Wars" and "Superman", Hollywood were like pretty reserved with investing money into non-profiting projects

Old Hollywood has me permanently spellbound. Classy times, classy people.

I think censorship plays a huge role in it.

Old Hollywood had more restrictions on what can be put on screen so the writing had to be solid to carry the movie. Screenplays and scripts were absolutely fantastic in the earlier years.

New Hollywood has far less restrictions on what can be put on screen so (as a whole) the writing has dipped a bit to make room for shock value. The great screenplays are just few and far between now. However the look of new films is just way more stunningly beautiful than the majority of older films.

I don't choose between the two but those are the differences for me.

I heard Cinema is the greatest form of art because it brings together the art of photography (cinematography), writing, acting, and music (movie score) all together in one medium - film. I thought the movies old Hollywood produced had more elements of literature and theatre in them (especially the latter), they were important to film makers because it was still a new medium and that's where they drew their inspiration and direction.
