The Wire may have the best opening scene of all time, the SFU has the best ending. No show has ever answered all your questions in such a concise and artful manner than SFU's series finale.
The Wire is a close 2nd. Sopranos 3rd. Deadwood 4th. Entourage 5th. 6th is a wash between Boardwalk and Game of Thrones. Curb is great but it's a tough league to play in.
OZ is honorable mention. Made HBO series' possible in the first place.
No one will argue that Tales From the Crypt came first. But O.Z. really paved the way. It essentially laid out the blueprint for every modern day premium cable drama. Not to mention HBO has re-used almost all of the actors from O.Z. in several of their other shows.
I have to credit O.Z. to being the first HBO series as we know them today.
I'm currently re-watching it as well. Getting through the second season, which is the low point (albeit still fantastic) for me.
I'm amazed how willing the show is to dump their main characters (like mcnaulty) in favor of someone completely random to focus on.
I don't see the hate for season 2, I mean do you guys just watch it for the gangbangers or something? 2 did a great job of showing the decline of industrialisation in America, and it's impact on the blue collar work force. Suddenly they were being forced to smuggle drugs on the side to make ends meet. Sobotka is easily one of the top 5 characters of the show.

Also I couldn't disagree more with this, the Kevin Finnerty arc is one of my favorite arcs of the entire show.

I have selected "Game of Thrones" one of my favorite HBO show of all. I prefer to watch show online at my pc for my entertainment. In this i like Daenerys Targaryen the most.
Since my last post here, me and my wife also saw all the seasons of Breaking Bad. BB was awesome, but still nowhere close to the brilliance of The Wire
