Comic Con 2013

Well San Diego Comic Con is well underway at the moment. I'd love to have all the comic con related stuff wrapped up in one place.

So is there anything interesting that you found out from Comic Con? Go ahead and post it in this thread.

I'm talking about anything from movie trailers to tv news, comics, graphic novels, collector toys or even cosplay babes.

I stumbled across MadeFire which is an iOS app that helps with displaying motion books on tablets and what not.

A few cosplayers to get that started off as well.

I recently went to the Melbourne one and it wasn't THAT spectacular... I met some of the cast of Charmed, which was interesting. lol.

The one of the right should have stayed home. Supergirl and the Joker are meh. But Batgirl can get it.

Here's some better ones...

I most certainly agree BUT I have a soft spot for my fellow geeks/nerds so I don't care that they look a bit homely they tried but you are most definitely right Batgirl is the best one out of that bunch. I just posted that to get it started. I wasn't trying to say they were the best ones.

Did you get their autographs? :D I may to go the NY one in October but the San Diego one is the mecca.

I really like that one Circe, Hipster Disney Princesses.

If you guys were going to cosplay what would you go as?

I would probably go as Blanka but good god the time that it's going to take to cover me in green make up from head to toe would be a PITA but it would be worth it.

Oh yeah, I also heard they showed the pilot for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. I can't wait til that show comes on.

misspoptart 07-21-2013 08:15 AM

I would be Rikku!

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lo...9a20o1_500.jpg

PS. I love cosplay. But I've never tried it. :3 And I don't know who this girl is.

bob. 07-21-2013 04:37 PM

i'd say the biggest news is the Superbum....eh i mean man and Batman movie

but as for something that won't suck

marvels announcement of Guardians of the Galaxy with an appearance of the entire cast

the teaser for Avengers 2!!!!! The Age of Ultron!!!!!!!!!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier looks fucking amazing

Tom Hiddleston coming out and doing an entire interview in character as Loki must have been awesome

i wish i could have been there for the Enders Game panel....meeting Harrison Ford would be great

i'm going next year :)

djchameleon 07-21-2013 04:42 PM

what? There was a teaser for Avengers 2? I didn't hear about that. I couldn't care less about Captain America's solo movie or Thor's for that matter. I haven't watched the first one and won't be watching the sequels.

I wanted contacts that made my eyes look like Rikku but the guy selling the designer contacts only had purple with red swirls so I bought those instead and wore them for a couple of months mostly out clubbing and to bars.

Also after hearing about the Batman Superman movie for 2015. I thought they weren't doing Justice League again but it's slated for 2017.

Also a Flash movie in 2016.

bob. 07-21-2013 04:54 PM

ohhh i did not hear about the Flash movie :)

seriously the Thor movie is ok....but i really felt they scored with Captain America....just a very well done flick

also i think they have slated the Justice League film for 2017

and edit again

i think they should concentrate on making a good Superman flick before teaming him up with anyone

djchameleon 07-21-2013 04:56 PM

bob when you go next year will you be doing any cosplay?

I'm thinking about going to the NY one here in a few months but I'd love to go to the San Diego one.

I may see you there next year!

bob. 07-21-2013 05:13 PM

first and foremost....seriously man if you can make it let me know and we will have to hang out and get drinks :)

as for cosplay....eh my cosplay days are over.....although i was thinking of going as the food critic from Ratatouille
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__...-Anton_Ego.jpg

this will be my third Comic Con but my first with friends that arn't looking for jobs in the industry....so i can just have fun :)

Engine 07-21-2013 05:20 PM

Anyone in San Diego: say hello to Jhonen Vasquez for me.
I haven't paid attention to his current work but for some reason I decided to re-read Squee and JTHM about a month ago.

Is there any buzz about the film yet? If they do it right then it could be one of the best sci fi movies of all time. But it's Hollywood, so I'm assuming that I'll be wanting to walk out of the theater a half hour in.

bob. 07-22-2013 02:37 PM

from the previews it looks pretty good....the kid they got playing Ender in my opinion is pretty spot on....well looks wise

Spoiler for HUGE spoiler if you have not read the book.....like Darth Vader is Luke's dad type of spoiler:
personally i think the key is to keep the real meaning of the game hidden from the audience....if this is going to work in any way shape or form as it did with the book....the audience has to be clueless to the idea that the game is in fact real.....and personally i think they can be successful if they do it right.....an example would be The Others....that was perfect execution of the same idea.....and like The Others this is a 100% character driven story....so they have to keep you involved in the characters and how they react to the situations....the good thing here is that there is plenty of awesome battle room stuff to keep an ignorant and a knowing audience enthralled....i just think they really have to balance everything nicely....and they cannot even give a hint as to what the game really is....when i first read the book i was floored when this was revealed but at the same time i understood completely

there were rumors a while back that they would be combining Ender's Game with Ender's Shadow for the film.....personally i think that would loose some of the grip the story can have on the reader/audience...although i very much enjoyed reading Bean's story

LoathsomePete 07-22-2013 03:38 PM

What does everyone think of the next Superman movie bringing in Batman?

Sorry I haven't quite yet mastered the emerging language of "using animated .gifs to express my thoughts"

I think it's because I try to stay out of the Lounge as much as possible.

Circe 07-22-2013 04:06 PM

I saw it coming from a mile away because it's exactly the kind of cheap film tactic to prey on nerds that Hollywood's been applying for the past few years. As long as Nolan's batman isn't being used in a Zack Snyder film I don't really care. I'm projecting this whole Justice League farce to fall apart eventually so any forgettable Superman/Batman combos that come out of it aren't interesting to me at all.

Paul Smeenus 07-22-2013 04:07 PM

^^^^ This ^^^^

LoathsomePete 07-22-2013 04:33 PM

I can't really say I'm that excited or optimistic either. With bringing on the same team as Man of Steel I can't help but think all the same problems with that movie are going to be present in the new one. I mean if you thought Superman was depressing in Man of Steel, it's going to be made all the worse when you bring in Captain Bring-Down (Batman). Not only that but with only three years after Christopher Nolan's trilogy fresh in everyone's minds, the new Batman is going to go up against constant scrutiny.

It really does feel like this Justice League movie is being made because Warner Bros. thinks it has to be made now after The Avengers happened, not because someone is desperate to tell a story about a group of superheroes.

Circe 07-22-2013 04:57 PM

Not to mention they still don't have a way of making it happen. DC have the problem of all but three or four of their heroes being largely forgotten in pop culture, and building a Justice League without those guys getting their own films is a guaranteed disaster. Man of Steel has not encouraged audiences to look forward to those films and it's mainly because studios just do not ****ing learn that we are all sick of origin stories for popular heroes by now. Nobody wants to sit around for half the film watching the story of where Superman came from for the fiftieth time, nor do they want to put up with yet another scene of Bruce Wayne's parents being shot and the boy's journey towards the mask. We enjoy variety and originality, even if research predicts that Superman will sell more tickets than Nightwing.

Wanna know why The Avengers did so well? Good but obscure heroes being brought into the public eye with a breath of new fresh air. Contrast that with Warner Bros making the billionth Superman film this decade and sticking yet another reboot of Batman in there for good measure. They don't even have the balls to take on a Wonder Woman film because their flowcharts project that a female superhero film is a slightly bigger risk. Not to mention that they're eventually going to have to try and salvage something out of the mess that was that Green Lantern film (which is possible - just look at the Hulk). I just wish they'd stop beating the dead horse of their two most iconic characters and get around to actually trying to fulfill the ambition.

In its current state this Justice League project has the very real potential to kill off the A list superhero trend for good, which is worrying. I'd really rather the trend burned out of its own accord after saying all it had to say, which is my way of saying I want a Deadpool film and another Daredevil that doesn't suck before we hopefully move on to something that isn't linked to Michael Bay at all.

LoathsomePete 07-23-2013 11:38 AM

Yeah the fact that they're doing a Flash movie before Wonder Woman kind of goes to show how little respect Warner Bros. seems to have for the source material. There are three components to the Justice League, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Human Sonic the Hedgehog is an important character to the Justice League, but he doesn't need his own movie.

As to that movie being what could possibly kill off the superhero movie genre, I think it could definitely kill off Warner Bros. interest in making superhero movies that aren't Batman. I think it will be a mixture of oversaturation and something new coming along that will eventually do it, although if Marvel studios and Disney play their cards right I don't think that will happen before 2020.

It will be interesting how they incorporate some of the weirder superheroes like Ant-Man and Dr. Strange, and I would not be surprised if they test those characters in that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series that starts up in the fall. I don't think it's impossible to get the more casual superhero fans into the stranger elements of comics, and from what I've heard the fan reaction to Guardians of the Galaxy was pretty positive and I have a feeling the movie will do alright next year.

What's sad is that if Warner Bros. got their sh*t together earlier, they could have done the exact same thing that Marvel did with Agent Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. in Iron Man. While she is a little obscure, Agent Cameron Chase of the Department of Extranormal Operations would have been a great character to help with world building in their three big movies of the last 6 years. I'm still hoping Warner Bros. can pull it together and do justice to to an expanded DC universe, but I'm not holding my breath.

I was just thinking the same thing earlier today/last night.

Spoiler for Spoiler:
If they try to turn the final space battle sequences into actual space battles to appease the braindead, special effects, cro-mag movie goers then no matter how much they do right, the whole thing might as well have never been made. About the rest of the game too obviously, but the last part seems like the easiest thing to for them to puss out on and ruin. I don't see how they could be that dumb, but with Hollywood one should never assume competence.

Another thing they absolutely need to nail down is making Ender and the rest of the children sympathetic, but not "Aw, poor baby!" sympathetic. They need to be able to be seen as *******s just as much as children. The book was all about children-as-adults, and that is another easy thing to **** up if they don't really know what they're doing.

And the most likely way to ruin it is a love interest. I can smell it. I can almost taste the studio not getting the need for Ender to be isolated from everyone, including his friends. A love interest would destroy that and take entirely to much time away from what matters.

If the test footage for Ant-Man is any indication they are probably going to go a straight comedy route for him.

that's a pretty damn awesome Penguin.

OMFG, I just found out that Bishop and Colossus is going to be in the next X-men movie. I'm more hyped for Bishop though. Awesome sauce.

Also, stupid Nigri didn't show up for Comic Con.... /sadface.

But here are two comic con cosplay related videos to make up for it!
