Shark week
Is there a thread about this already?
I know it's almost over but it's honestly one of my favorite weeks and I want someone to watch Sharkpocalypse and play the Shark week drinking game and love shark week with me. https://twitter.com/WorkahoIicsDers/...554240/photo/1 |

I didn't even know it was Shark Week or that it existed, but my best friend is coming over tomorrow night to get drunk and watch Sharknado. |
I absolutely love Shark Week!
This year it was a little weak for me though, since it was SO strongly based on people getting attacked and all of that jazz. It just wasn't my thing. I like learning about the actual animals. Not watching the people watching the animals... ;P |

I have no idea! I can look up some articles and see what I find. :D

it started in the late 80s on Discovery as a way to promote shark awareness and protection....according to their website it is the longest running annual tv event in history
i have to agree that this year is a little lacking but interesting all the same the fake documentary about the Megalodon was just stupid.....but somewhat entertaining in a "this is so bad its funny" kind of way the top 10 was interesting considering the Great White was knocked down a notch by the bull shark and when they were talking about the Mako...they brought up a great point.....basically due to climate and ocean temperature change....should this very intelligent and VERY fast shark start being able to swim in shallow waters....we are in for many more attacks and deaths http://www.boncherry.com/blog/wp-con...mako-shark.jpg ^he is a cute one though.....and as far as i know the only shark that has shown scientist problem solving ability....very scary :) i also really enjoyed the comparison of great white attacks to human serial killers....that one was very interesting and i'll be watching the news next year to see if the rouge shark returns to the same beach on the same day and kills a third person |
I was obviously missing all of the good programs this year!
I saw the program where they were following sharks to their mating grounds, which involved way too much rough activity towards the sharks for me. I also saw the extremely boring program where they connect the "Shark Cam" to the shark but it's far too green to see anything anyway! A fun program I saw was one with two "Shark Experts" who basically were trying to figure out why Sharks were moving in on us and why sharks not expected to attack, were beginning to. It was called "Sharkpocalypse" did you see that one? They were also funny, which I appreciated. Others I saw were more related to being attacked by sharks, surviving sharks, stuff like that. I apparently missed some really great stuff. My sister thought Megaladon was hilarious and was showing me pictures on the internet and stuff of this so-called creature. A lot of people believed it, but I was more upset that the mermaid program on AnimalPlanet was a mockumentary. I wanted so badly for the videos to be real! I obviously didn't believe the one with the two kids though... that's a different conversation entirely. Anyway, I loved Shark Week all the same and I thank you for you research on its beginning, I'm sure Vanilla will too! |

i've been doing a mixture of on demand, recording and downloading this year.....i just got Sharkpocalypse and will watch it later tonight :)....might even try the drinking game with it :)
wait a lot of people believed the one about Megaladon?!? if a 98 foot shark with several rows of 18 inch teeth was somehow released on the current eco system of the ocean....i think everything would die :) on but off subject....there is a book called "Meg" by author Steve Alten....it was his first book and is a very entertain romp about what could happen should a Megaladon get released in the current ocean.....if you got a day or two and just want some absolutely entertaining reading i highly suggest it http://img1.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n2/n11656.jpg |

so with sharks on the brain
which is your favorite shark and why? have you ever encountered one? (thinking the kids in Australia might have a story or two and maybe any surfers in the LA area.....Fred?) http://pacificvoyagers.org/wp-conten...nMakoShark.jpg personally my favorite shark is the Mako...../it is simply amazing....like i said it has problem solving intelligence, has been clocked at 46 mph (but they think is can swim as fast as 68) often jumps over 9 feet in the air and has been known to jump onto boats and bite people fishing it it's big but not in comparison to its much larger brothers.....average around 10 feet and its very aggressive....and again fucking fast http://www.oceanwideimages.com/image...43M2661-39.jpg ^just imagine this coming at you at 40 mph it is a deep sea fish and it's colors represent the deep ocean....a dark shimmering blue on top and fatal white on bottom it's tail is more like a tuna than a shark....which makes it swim at the speeds it can reach and again when it is not successful it will try something different till it gets the results it wants....amazing unfortunately it is also one of the most prized sharks for human consumption and is a favorite for deep sea fisherman |
Bart: My favourite shark is the tiger shark. What about you Milhouse?
Milhouse: The nurse shark... I mean... (cue getting beaten up by Jimbo et al) |
I have encountered a Great White before at the beach (but I was on a boat), but it's not uncommon here. You just have to be smart and not swim or surf at dawn or dusk. Most people who have been attacked by sharks have been swimming or surfing at dawn or dusk, I encourage all of my surfer friends to NOT do those pre or post work surfs or you're pretty much asking for it!
Also, it's sad because films like Jaws have depicted Great Whites as ferocious man-eaters, but in reality humans are not their ideal prey. Often when sharks attack humans it's by accident because they thought they were a seal or something, then they take a bite and think "yuck!" |
i've read and heard several interviews with Peter Benchley expressing regret for the fear he caused by writing Jaws (it's still an awesome book and movie) and the damage it has done to the population of the Great White
sharks require fat and lets face it the majority of people who really use the ocean for recreation are surfers, divers and swimmers....who all tend to be lean and athletic.....not a sharks interest how close were you to it? |

From memory the shark was only about 5 metres or so from our boat, but we were in a large speed boat, the shark was scared and swam away pretty quickly. I took a photo at the time, I'll try to find it :) |
5 meters!....to a Great White shark :)
i looked into dives down there years ago and it would cost me $10,000 with a guarantee of that :)....with a cage dive have to admit it's all about south Africa now.....i think i would die if i saw a shark breach right in front of me http://www.apexpredators.com/photogr...54da485c87.jpg ^=me dead |

Also I like big sharks. Maybe you'll remember which one I'm thinking of, bob, but I love the one in the program where they were trying to put a camera on its fin! Not the one where they stalk it, but another one where it was just a painless clip... Do you remember that one? It was SOOOO much bigger than the boat! |
I was reading something on Cracked today about that Megalodon documentary causing some controversy for idiots thinking it's true. Discovery or Animal Planet did something a little while ago with a fake mermaid documentary, but these things also seem to get the highest ratings so I can't really begrudge the network for milking them.
As for my favorite shark, I'm with bob, I've always liked makos, or at least ever since I saw Deep Blue Sea and was more frightened of them than the great whites from the Jaws series. In a side note, who's everyone's favorite street shark? Mine's Big Slammu the Whale Shark. |
Yeah i was just talking about the Mermaid documentary, I wish it was real D:

if i saw a school of Hammerheads i think i would just die....i was going to mention that Discovery just finished an amazing series called North America....i think it was the 2nd episode and they were talking about the Black Fin migration to the gulf in Florida......the show this high shot and there are thousands of sharks in the water....they pan back just a little and you see the beach is literally feet away from these sharks.....and then you see this gigantic fish.....there to feed on the already large black fins.....it was a Hammerhead and it was simply amazing..... so my personal favorite scene from this years shark week first off notice that the shark immediately went for the floatation device not the cage itself or an attempt to taste whats inside the cage.....in the full show you know that this is the first time that guy ever got into the water with a shark...let alone an aggressive 18 foot one....he does say NEVER again :) |

I should actually admit that I have never watched Shark Week shows.
