Bump

So, for most of my life I've toyed with the idea of getting a job in gaming development. It just always seemed to be the thing I wanted to do most. After I dropped out of college two years ago, I thought about being a game writer, but I quickly realized I was very bad at making an original narrative and, in particular, interesting characters. It took close to two years of self-reflection but I've finally decided upon a career: level design.

Everything in not only video games, but my entire life points to this. Although my dream job is to be the level designer for an epic first person shooter like Crysis, I don't particularly care what game I'm designing levels for, I just like doing it.

Good luck. Tons of competition and insane work hours. I have stayed away from a gaming career because I never want them to feel like work. I don't know if I could enjoy them the same if I was surrounded by 24/7. Kinda like a gynecologist.

@Wpn

That's a good outlook, before taking the daunting task of being the head programmer being a team player first could serve you well. idk alot about being a game programmer but i imagine you work your way up to the top.

Thank you, to both of you. I had a brief crisis recently because I mistakenly believed I had to learn how to program to be a level designer, but I only need to learn scripting which is not that complex.

It's funny, but I have not really been playing games for close to a year. I'm a dreamer and I guess I've gotten to the point where I've absorbed so many games that have things I like that I feel a desire to make a game that has influences from all of those, while adding things that none of them have.

If you wonder why I'm posting in a thread whose topic I know nothing about, here's the explanation : http://www.musicbanter.com/games-lis...litz-game.html

I can't guarantee that I'll read all 104 posts in Black Francis's thread; I think instead I'll wait until Trollheart makes an off-topic joke, and I can join in then.

Trollheart may avoid this thread since he's game. :D

I don't really play games as much as I used to. One of the reasons why is that a lot of modern games don't really speak to me.

I'd hate to get into the tedious details of why, since I prefer not to think much about games anymore. I used to be a big time gamer and I'm not going back to that lifestyle ever again.

There's probably still some good stuff coming out every year, but I don't really care.

OK, I might as well share my only experience of what it's like to be a gamer.

Last month, I downloaded NetHack and got hooked. Over the course of three days I spent six-seven hours playing it.

Then I got tired of the game and deleted it.

Hardcore...
