Film Adaptations

What books/TV shows/comic strips/refrigerator magnets do you think could be made into a good film? Which director/writer/actor would make a good fit for it in your opinion?

I don't mean to sour this thread, as it's a totally fair question to ask, but I'm seriously tired of adaptions. There are so many original screenplays out there shelved because studios want the easy money by adapting something from a loved franchise/book/show. I want to see something original for a change.

honestly, I prefer television adaptations because there's so much more time to actually flesh out the story.
most of my favourite books wouldn't translate to the screen well however

On that subject, I'm not sure if you heard (you probably have) but Aronofsky is doing an HBO adaptation of the Atwood's MadAddam trilogy. I'm excited to see how it will play out.

yeah everyone told me. it's going to be garbage, aronovsky can't make media without ****ing up a woman's character

I'd really love to see more adaptations of David Mitchell's books, Cloud Atlas was decent and that was one of his least adaptable books in the hands of below average directors. In fact, if I ever 'make it' I'd love to adapt both Black Swan Green and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet.
Marabou Stork Nightmares could be amazing, Welsh's books have proved to make great films in the past.
But what really takes the cake for me is the work of Chekhov and Ibsen - my favourites respectively are Three Sisters and The Pillars Of The Community. Amazing and potent stories that could be even richer in a cinematic setting.
However, I do agree with Exo hugely. Original stories again and again make better films, and there aren't nearly enough. I don't think adaptations are the big problem there though - mainly it's reboots, remakes, and sequels.

Thousand Autumns would make the best adaptation, that book was ****ing crazy.

He has a new book coming out in September, you know

Jaime Hernandez keeps teasing and saying he's gonna write a script for an adaptation of the Love and Rockets comic series. Course, it's been about 6 years now and nothing's happened. One of these days...

Scarlette Johanson would be perfect as Penny Century.
