Did you see the Blomkamp interview that made the rounds about a week ago about how he regrets how he handled Elysium? He basically said he got so excited about establishing the universe that he let the plot get away from him, which, I think, sounds about right haha. But yeah, agree with the bolded completely.

That actually doesn't surprise me - Elysium seemed a lot to me like the kind of film that didn't quite end up how Blomkamp wanted it to from day 1. It seemed really watered down for me as well. District 9 was a powerful movie that had balls. By the end of Elysium I was so bored I couldn't wait to get out of the theatre and go to some bars :p: Maybe it's just me, but it felt like TriStar gave him $100million+ to make that movie on the condition that he have a studio exec constantly standing over his shoulder, getting him to shoehorn in a romantic subplot, shake the camera about way more than necessary, that sort of thing.
Chappie looks like it could be alright, at least. I hope it is, anyway. Since Blomkamp's in charge of the next Alien movie (big fan of the franchise here), I need all the good omens about him as a director that I can get!
