You're right. I totally forgot about Frank Zappa.

How can you (currently) have a Don Van Vliet avatar and forget about Frank Zapppa?

Frownland 08-11-2015 10:44 PM

My avatar shows up after I post, not while I'm typing it.

I've also forgotten about Ned Flanders. I didn't really think my list through.

(my Christmas cards, circa 2013 - the mister didn't think they were fit for distribution)

Frownland 08-13-2015 12:27 AM

Does he know what Christmas is? Those cards would only be inappropriate if they were put out as Hanukkah cards.

Anyway, whichever guy you're fawning over has a very Hitler-esque stache. Might as well include Hitler if you're going to keep with the theme.

also, Frowns, I'm surprised at you.

THAT MAN IS RON MAEL.

RON MAEL IS ONE OF MANY LOVES OF MY LIFE.

Frownland 08-13-2015 12:45 AM

I'm quite aware. As long as he isn't responsible for that falsetto bull**** I'm cool with him, but that's a Hitleresque moustache regardless of how massive your ladyboner for him is.

In a way, he is responsible for the falsetto, having written all of his melodies on the high end of the keyboard (I can't quite remember it right now but he once basically said that he writes the songs whether or not he thinks his brother can hit the notes (but he better)) but mostly he's just responsible for hilarious lyrics and his moustache.

Which he says was modeled after Charlie Chaplin.

Frownland 08-13-2015 12:48 AM

Sure it was.

Sparks are pretty damn cool and the falsetto singing is fun.

My feelings exactly. Sparks were actually banned from French tv for Ron's moustache.

"But when I trimmed it real small
my Jewish friends would never call
(wooo ooo oooo oooo)
my, my, my, my, my moustache, moustache, moustache, moustache, moustache....."

It's pretty the sole reason I'm not a fan of them. I really like their instrumentation, but the singing just annoys me too much.

Sparks saved my life. When I discovered them I was so far down the rabbit hole of depression I wasn't sure if I was going to survive. I have a whole story behind that, but I'll spare you. Singing along to their songs was therapeutic and fun as hell.

Maybe you'd be a fan of their more recent work? The falsetto is mostly absent.

Frownland 08-13-2015 01:03 AM

I'll try it. I really liked FFS though.

Would someone who hates indie/alternative like it?

Frownland 08-13-2015 01:05 AM

Mmm...maybe. I'd say it stands out enough to be enjoyable. If you like Sparks you'll probably dig it.

FFS has been a marvelous thing to witness.

I bought the first LP on vinyl. It's red. :) The lyrics are brilliant, musicianship beyond perfect. I just love the lush marriage of Franz Ferdinand and Sparks. A match made in musical heaven.

Frownland 08-13-2015 01:07 AM

First LP as in serial number 001? Because that's pretty ****ing awesome, regardless of what vinyl it is. If not, are you referring to the first pressing?

I mean, first LP as in, I bet there will be another! :) I have many optimistic feelings about the future of FFS.
