Frank Zappa - A day with Frank Zappa (1971)

There's also an excellent Zappa biography from the BBC, from 1993, which was on YouTube as a single upload but has been taken down. I could only find 3 of 4 parts of it (uploaded by a different person) that are still there. Well worth tracking down to see the entire show.

The Edge is ridiculously out of place in that film. I wonder how much he paid them to be included.

It is a pretty great film, though. That opening scene inspired me to start making my own instruments.

I think he fit perfectly. You have the 70s rock god, the 80s ambient sound effect pioneer (well, not pioneer but he sure brought it to the masses), and then the new kid on the block fusing both Page and the Edge's stuff, along with old black bluesy roots music into a modern grunge/grind/pop formula.

Best scene in the movie was Jack and Dave's reaction when Page played the WLL intro. The looks on their faces are priceless.

prisoner437x3y0 12-05-2015 01:13 PM

right on, thanks a lot guys

I recently watched the joy division film, which wasn't a doc but was okay.

The amy winehouse "amy" is okay, if admittedly just a compilation of home video youtube clips. Nobody seemed to really care about her too much though, and she actually enjoyed going to rehab but most of those around her scoffed at it.

and the montage of heck which i thought was pretty good too. Kurt is actually fairly intellectual but also very childish--but it unclear because he's never sober.

It Might Get Loud is a good one but im with Frowm, Edge was outta place in that movie. his segment was the most boring one and i didn't see him show alot of skill in the guitar it looked like his style of playing is completely dependent on his guitar pedals. Jack & Jimmy rocked though, they were great on that film, especially Jack.

No no no. Buzz Osbourne (of Melvins fame and Kurt's childhood friend) has repeatedly called out Montage of Heck as very inaccurate and a disgrace to Kurt. There are better documentaries of him out there, but MoH isn't one of them.

Another State of Mind- Depicts an early 80's tour with Social Distortion and Youth Brigade. Often hailed as one of the greatest punk docs.

Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, loved it. Did not expect to see something like that on Netflix.

look, i know I've seen all of them. Besides the other one narrated by kurt, which i forget about, this one is probably the best.

Everything in montage of heck is narrated by kurt, who may or may not have been embellishing some of his history.

It's worth a watch but certainly don't have to accept anything it portrays.

I don't know why he went with courtney love.

All these insecure,m emotional sensitive dudes don't seem to benefit from relationship that much--most notably elliott smith.

You hit the nail on the head with that one. Have you read any of the biographies about him? He certainly seemed to lose himself in the continuous presence of others.

Black Francis 12-10-2015 01:24 PM

Idk much about his personal life but his death looked really shady, i read he was having an argument with his gf and then she went to the bathroom and when she came out she found him with a knife stuck in his chest. supposedly he killed himself but there were no hesitation wounds.

I find it hard to believe that if you were to kill yourself you would do it in such a painful way but then again, i didn't know elliot personally.
