Default 8th Generation of Console Gaming

I'm giving this a broad title so it will encompass the next Xbox when Microsoft debuts that (my guess at E3).

Anyways, if you're even remotely connected to the video gaming world you no doubt heard about Sony finally confirming that they are developing a new console, the Playstation 4. While they didn't actually show the console, they did list its specs and some of the new features they've implemented as well as a few of the debut titles. Here's a link if you feel like reading it yourself.

Everything We Know About The PS4, Out This Holiday Season, And The Games Announced Tonight

Here's the cliff notes
  • It won't require a constant online connection
  • 8-core AMD "Jaguar" x86-64 with integrated graphics APU
  • 8 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory (no idea what that means)
  • built-in 80.211 b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • Blu-Ray
  • DualShock 4 controller (with a lot of fancy crap inside it)
  • It will support Playstation Move
  • Newly designed Playstation Eye with two 1280x800px cameras
  • Connectivity to the Playstation Vita to be used as another screen
  • The ability to play games as you download
  • Holiday 2013 launch
  • No backwards compatibility

Confirmed titles

Deep Down (working title)[
Destiny
Diablo III
Driveclub
Final Fantasy (TBA)
Infamous: Second Son
Killzone: Shadow Fall
Knack
WATCH_DOGS
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witness

Here's the controller.

So... what's the consensus?

With the projected price at around $430, ill stick with Xbox.

The last console I bought was the Wii, and I've been wanting to get my own 360 since my daughter is constantly on hers (PS3 too). I'm old and tired and need a console where I can just sit with a controller like I used to. Although the PS4 looks enticing with it's wifi capabilties, and dual monitor access, I think I'll wait for XBox to rear it's head with a competition stomper.

I've bought the newest Playstation each time its come out and I don't see anything changing. 430 sounds resonable in comparison to the initial ps3 pricing levels. My hope is it is backwards compatible as that would keep my console display on a much smaller scale. Sounds like they have upgraded everything about it which is to be expected, so i'll certainly bite the bullet and purchase it first day.

That low? Huh, I guess they learned from last time. I was expecting at least $550. Regardless, the price is always going to be most expensive at first to take into account the premium of getting to play it first. It definitely has piqued my interest, but I doubt I'll be buying it at launch, or even the new Xbox. I'm planning to use my tax return to buy a mid-range gaming PC.

No backwards compatibility though, I'll put that in the bullet point. I've also been reading a lot of rumors about limiting the purchase of used games, but so far nothing to indicate those were true.

Apparently they're trying to work out the kinks so to speak on the backwards compatibility. WTF does that even mean. Thats basically my selling point on it. I don't desire the clutter of two consoles. Obviously i'd be more apt to play the newest and latest and greatest, but I like the option of throwing in the ps3 games if i so desire. I seriously don't think the console is going to be that cheap also. I would think at the very lowest price point we'll be looking at the very least 499.00. And thats before tax and before buying an extra controller which is a must.

The ability to play games is a big one for me. I wish all consoles would do that, and even computers. It's annoying having to wait for a download to finish and not be able to play other games.

you can stream ps1, ps2 and ps3 games from cloud.

All games you buy from the store will be instantly playable as well, because of the cloud. You can still download them but you can play them whilst downloading.

It will support used games as well.

They needed a new ip for launch, though the current roster is good. They showed more watch dog footy and that game looks really promising.
