Dazed and Confused (1993) It's a day in a life like American Graffiti or Super Bad. An ensemble cast of 70s teenagers doing whatever they have to do on the last day of school. Pink is pressed by the HS football team coach to sign a paper. David Wooderson gives him advice and tells him "Man, it's the same bull**** they tried to pull in my day. If it ain't that piece of paper, there's some other choice they're gonna try and make for you. You gotta do what Randall Pink Floyd wants to do man. Let me tell you this, the older you do get the more rules they're gonna try to get you to follow. You just gotta keep livin' man, L-I-V-I-N." There's also cricket bats, baseball, hazzing, bell bottom jeans, a Puka shell necklace, muscle cars and all that other good 70s stuff and a killer sound track on top of that. Oh not to forget a keg party in the park, with banter like "George Washington was in a cult, and the cult was into aliens, man."

29. Harold and Maude

Harold's existential obsession with death is challenged by Maude's unique take on life. Add a great Cat Stevens soundtrack and you have one of my favourite movies.

There wasn't; I just assumed that like with the Metal thread people would do that. As I say, not necessary but it does help for those who have not seen the movie(s).

Forget Star Wars: this is the real sci-fi movie. If you come out of it knowing what's going on you're a better man than I, which would not be hard. Classic (literally) soundtrack by Strauss(es).

Monty Python's Life of Brian
"He's not the Messiah! He's a very naughty boy!" Luckless Graham Chapman gets mistaken for Christ by a group of people who really should know better. Totally hilarious.

Casablanca.
You can keep your Treasures of the Sierra Madres and your Maltese Falcons, this is the Bogey movie to end all Bogey movies. More quotable than a good episode of Fawlty Towers, with an engaging storyline and fantastic performances all round. There's a reason why it's a classic.

Born on the Fourth of July.
When Tom Cruise could actually act. An incredible "film of two halves", based on the true story of Ron Kovich, who fought in the Vietnam War, and later became one of its most vocal opponents. Superb.

Two detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi.

35. Primal Fear
An altar boy is accused of murdering a priest, and the truth is buried several layers deep.

36. American History X
A former neo-nazi skinhead tries to prevent his younger brother from going down the same wrong path that he did.

37. Higher Learning
People from all different walks of life, encounter racial tension, rape, responsibility, and the meaning of an education on a university campus.

38. Trainspotting
Renton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends.

39. Synecdoche, New York

Charlie Kaufman has become renowned for his hilarious yet intelligent tongue-in-cheek writing over the years, Synechdoche, New York however is an entirely different entity from the rest of his material. Starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his career defining roles, the film is the best blend of art house influence, dark comedy, and typical Charlie Kaufman moments. The attention to detail and meticulous plot makes this film worthy of hundreds of viewings, and chances are you still won't know what to make of it afterwards.

40. Taxi Driver

Really guys? Can't believe this has yet to be mentioned. Martin Scorsese's reputation as one of the best directors of all-time is well-earned, and Taxi Driver is demonstrates exactly what makes him so special. Robert De Niro's performance as Travis Bickle is undoubtedly one of the greatest acting jobs I've ever seen.

41. Antichrist

This is one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen and is one of the few moments you will find director Lars Von Trier discover the perfect balance between pretentious and genius. A must see for anyone into films that will make your stomach churn without having to turn your brain off.

42. Midnight in the Garden of Good an Evil: superb storyline, diverse and intriguing array of characters (based on actual people), a story about wealth, betrayal, prejudice, journalism, murder, voodoo, Southern culture, sprinkled with some of my favorite courtroom scenes. Great cast led by Kevin Spacey and John Cusak. Directed by Clint Eastwood.

43. Lars and the Real Girl: an adult man with an undiagnosed social disorder mail orders a life-size sex doll to be his girlfriend, while the whole town plays along. I never truly appreciated Ryan Gosling until he took this role.

44. The Big Short: excellent and hilariously well-written film about the housing market crash and those that predicted it. Movie is much faster-paced than one might expect, and this is probably my favorite work from both Christian Bale and Steve Carrell (the latter of whom I never cared for before this movie).
