Default The Sandman: A Beginner's Journey

So this is the plan. Having heard a lot about, but never read one panel of, this epic comic franchise, I intend to begin reading it and at the same time detail both the story and my impressions of it as I read, either through journal format or even just here.

I could do with some advice as to where to start so as to go in the right order, and I would ask anyone who is familiar with it not to spoil it for me. Come along for the ride, sure, but let me make the discoveries on my own.

Interested?

1. ****. Yes. Sandman was one the first things I got into when I was getting into comics. I have a big dumb omnibus so I might just read along with you.

2. Just start at the beginning.

You're welcome to read along with me, just no spoilers.

Begin at the beginning, yes, but aren't there various series, editions, spin-offs, sequels, prequels? I just want to make sure I start at the right point.

Yeah but the first arc introduces the character and the world and while I wouldn't call Sandman truly serial it gradually eases into a more episodic style and experiencing that artistic shift is as amazing as reading those stories. It's a different beast than Spider-Man or Batman and just jumping into it somewhere in the middle wouldn't be as rewarding imo.
